January 17, 2006 --
Well, the other shoe has finally dropped, and the house - cleaning is official. Charlie Joiner, and Eric Mangini are no longer on the Monarch staff. Instead, on Friday, the Monarchs will introduce Dennis Thurman and Mike Heimerdinger as their new co-ordinators.
Eric Mangini, the man the New York Jets wanted all along, was offered the head-coaching job last night and has accepted it, according to two industry sources with knowledge of the situation.
The Jets are expected to announce Mangini, who will turn 35 on Thursday, will be the youngest head coach in the NFL, as Herman Edwards' successor. He was the Kansas City Monarchs' second-year defensive coordinator this past season.
"We at the Monarchs wish him well," read a press release by team owner Sean Calliard, " He's a bright young man with a great future." The Monarchs had given Mangini permission to talk to the NFL after the XFL season ended, and the Jets came a callin'. The rumor was that with new head coach Donnie Henderson coming in, could he and Mangini get along. Problem solved. Apparently the Monarchs knew this would happen, as they are prepared to announce the hiring of former assistant Dennis Thurman - currently the Baltimore Ravens secondary coach, as their new defensive co-ordinator, and Mike Heimerdinger as their new offensive co-ordinator.
Dennis Thurman just finished his 2nd year as Ravens secondary coach and 4th year with the Baltimore Ravens. Thurman shared duties with secondary coach Johnnie Lynn. He helped the Ravens to their 1st AFC North Division title in 2003 as a assistant to then secondary coach Donnie Henderson.
As a testement to his coaching, despite losing NFL Co-MVP Steve McNair in 2004 Heimerdinger.s offense still produced a 1,000 yard rusher (Chris Brown 220-1,067-6 TD) and two 1,000 yard receivers ( Derrick Mason 96-1,168-7 TD and Drew Bennett 80-1,247-11 TD) . in 2003, the Titans scored the most points (435) since 1961, the second-highest total in franchise history . the Titans offense also posted a franchise record with six consecutive games scoring 30 or more points last season and became only the third NFL team to accomplish such a streak since 1970 (St. Louis Rams, San Diego Chargers)
