LAKE FOREST, IL--Chicago Enforcers rookie defensive tackle Rodrique Wright, the first of the Enforcers' two first-round picks in the XFL Draft in February, will be operated on today, according to his agent.
Wright, who was a late arrival to Sunday night's game in San Francisco--he did not accompany the team on Saturday to attend his uncle's funeral in Texas, had one sack in limited action.
"He is having surgery today,'' said Ben Dogra, Wright's agent. "Hopefully, he'll be able to play this season. Only the trainers and doctors can answer the question as to when he will be able to play.''
The 6-foot-5, 306-pound Wright played his senior season with the injury and still managed to notch 4 1/2 sacks and 13 tackles for losses while anchoring the National Champion Texas Longhorns' defense.
"We're going to go the route of what's best for me and the longevity of my career,'' Wright said after the game Sunday before knowing for sure if surgery was indicated. "I trust in [the Enforcers] and I've already seen the first MRI, so it could possibly be something that can mess me up throughout my career … so it's probably the best if it's needed.''
The Enforcers were depending heavily on Wright this year to join Jovon Bush as a force on the inside, if Wright misses any significant time the Enforcers will be back to where they were last year, depending on Sione Pouha, although he had a decent rookie year in 2005, and underachieving Donnell Washington, whose career has been racked by injuries to this point.
