Dallas, TX- It is said that the more things change, the more they stay the same. This idea was defintly true for the Carolina Colonels on Sunday afternoon as they fell to the Dallas Vipers 24-6.
For the Colonels, things looked very similar to last year as the only offensive production was two Micheal Husted field goals. One thing that may have hurt the Colonels was that starting Quarterback Rob Johnson went down with an injury on the Colonels first play from scrimmage, and back-up Kyle Orton came in and completed 19 of 37 passes for 190 yards and one interception.
When Head Coach Norm Chow was asked about the offense after the game, he said. "I am very embarssed by our offense today. I realize that when Rob went down with an injury that some things changed, and I know it was hard for Kyle as he didnt think he would be starting. Kyle would be the first to tell you that he didnt exactly play his best game today. We know that he can complete better than 51% of his passes. But not all the blame goes on the passing game, as we didnt run the ball well either. To average 2.2 yards a run is horrible, and there is no way we can win games with that going on. Now, on the bright side, I realize it was the first game, and we got 11 more to win and it starts next week in Washington. I was pretty satisfied with the defensive effort tonight. I mean, we gave up some plays, but there were several guys at new positions, so it is to be expected to a ceartin degree. I can only think that things will get better in the future, and now I gotta go get ready for the trip back to Raleigh."
The Colonels D gave up 319 yards of total offense to the Vipers. Both George Gause and Rookie Dusty Dvoracek had a sack each for the Colonels. Lee Jackson paced the Colonels with 8 tackles, and Andre Maddox recovered 2 fumbles.
There is no word on how long Rob Johnson will be out, but it is rumored to be at least 2 weeks. The Colonels go to the Nation's capitol to take on the Washington Glory next week, in a division game that both teams need as the Glory dropped a 48-20 decision to Jacksonville earlier today.
