Look at that, two entire divisions of teams with winning records, including a four-way tie for first in the XFL West. Life still does continue to be unfair though, this week's example: The Hitmen would be in the playoffs whie the Outlaws wouldn't. Then again, we've got five weeks to straighten that mess out.
Elsewhere the week in the XFL belonged to.........Quincy Carter? Yes less than two months after his release from the Montreal Alouettes--and the ensuing flamewar, Carter turned around a lifeless Ironmen and made them look like the Steelers for one week, but can he do it again this week in Birmingham--in the heart of hostile territory when he was playing in the SEC?
The Outlaws now have another nickname for their defense--as if they needed one. The "Dealers Of Doom" are now also known as "The Long Riders", which are named for brothers Rien and Devan--the latter had a monster game against Memphis, including a late fumble recovery for a TD. The Outlaws would like to keep the name for a while, so expect the Outlaws and the elder Long to come to terms on an extension well before free agency although he will be well sought after should he hit the market.
1. Dallas (6-1): How bout 'dem..........VIPERS?!
2. Las Vegas (4-3): Still the defending champs
3. Kansas City (5-2): Tough loss in San Fran, tougher obstacle coming up in Memphis.
4. Orlando (5-2): Running game still doesn't scare anyone, but right now they're doing it with D.
5. San Francisco (4-3): Bigtime win against Monarchs, but rematch with Outlaws means no time to rest.
6. Seattle (4-3): Solid comeback in Windy City
7. Los Angeles (4-3): Getting Sultan McCullough back for Dallas will be much appreciated.
8. Birmingham (4-3): Two months ago, the thought of Hollings/Cobbs and the defense carrying this team at this point would have been impossible.
9. Jacksonville (4-3): Bulls need Dahraan Diedrick, Patrick Hughes, and Courtney Watson back....and fast.
10. Memphis (4-3): Tough battle on Beale Street of teams coming off tough losses out west.
11. New York (3-4): Normally the Hitmen would rather talk about their 3-4 defense being related to their first place team, but you'll take what you can get.
12. Chicago (2-5): Usually collapses like this have been seen in Chi-town by the Bulls and the Bears.
13. Carolina (2-5): Gee, and just three weeks ago the Colonels were toying with signing Quincy Carter, go figure.
14. Pittsburgh (1-6): Quincy Carter, CFL reject to savior?
15. Washington (2-5): News around D.C. this week, Jarrett Payton announced that he's more of a soccer than football fan; his 2006 numbers: 46 carries, 90 yards. Yeah...............
16. Detroit (2-5): Um, how bout the Tigers?!?!?!?!
GAME(S) OF THE WEEK
Dallas at Los Angeles, Sun 4:00 USA
Kansas City at Memphis, Sun 4:00
The top teams in the XFL South are both on the road again this week, with Dallas having taken the lead in the division by running through the Detroit sieve and Kansas City fallen in San Francisco on a late interception by David Mitchell--which roughly gives him 200 game-saving INTs in his career. Both teams face teams coming off of tough losses: Los Angeles was down 17-10 late in the fourth quarter before Woodrow Dantzler was sacked by Rick Crowell for a safety in a 19-10 loss in Orlando. Memphis led 8-3 after three quarters in Las Vegas but could not hold on. The Maniax lead the Monarchs 3-1 all-time, with an impressive 16-6 shutdown in Kansas City in week four, in which LenDale White gained just nine yards. The Vipers are 3-0 against the Xtreme, with a 48-24 victory over the Xtreme in their last meeting in June 2004--it should also be noted that Dave Ragone was the starter, his last one before Kurt Warner took the reins. The Vipers beat the Xtreme in a 52-42 track meet in week ten of the 2003 season.
San Francisco at Las Vegas, Sun 8:00 UPN
The Outlaws have won three straight and are looking for revenge after a 13-8 loss in San Francisco six weeks ago. The Demons reversed a mini-slump with an impressive 24-22 win Sunday against high-flying Kansas City, and the Outlaws shut down XFL rushing leader Eric Shelton--holding him to just 43 yards on 14 carries--in a come-from-behind 19-8 win. The Outlaws lead the all-time series 7-4, but are 5-0 at home against the Demons.
