John Stocco looks to have found a home in the nation's capitol
The Washington Glory rookies have been on a hectic schedule. First being drafted only weeks ago, we're already in week 3 of the preseason. This hasn't allowed for much time to get to know the town, do any house hunting or anything like that. With meetings from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and then practice at 4 p.m., with weightlifting and workouts as well, the players were too busy for anything else.
But former Wisconsin quarterback John Stocco really only needed to see RFK Stadium anyway.
"I think walking into the locker room for the first time was a little overwhelming," Stocco said. "I had never really seen it before on TV or anything. It was kind of crazy."
Born in Richfield, Minn., Stocco grew up a loyal Minnesota Vikings fan and remained one while playing quarterback for the Wisconsin Badgers. But when the Glory had the rookies tour their RFK Stadium Hall of Fame, he could not help appreciating all the football history in Washington. Glory owner Dallas Hartwell had former Washington Redskins Mark Rypien and Gary Clarck among a few team veterans who addressed the newcomers, Stocco said.
"Some people like to say the XFL and NFL are rivals, but these guys need to know about the tradition at RFK. Football is football and we're here to provide quality competitive football for the people of Washington, D.C. this summer."
"They had been to a couple other places and they said this was a great place, great facilities and they really treat the players good here," Stocco said. "You can definitely see that."
Not drafted, Stocco only recently signed with the Glory, but has already found spot light. Going 10 for 10 in week 2 of preseason Stocco is likley to push XFL veteran Jamie Martin out of Washington. Meanwhile, XFL veterans Adrian McPherson and dark horse canidate Ryan Clement are competing for the starting job.
