Monarchs 27 Hitmen 21
KANSAS CITY, MO--A week after the Chiefs brought home another Lombardi, there was simply going to be no other way this was going to end, and Case Keenum made sure of it.
With third and eight on the Monarchs 35 Keenum reared back and completed his final pass of the day, a 12-yarder to Odell Beckham with just over a minute and a half left as the Monarchs held off the Hitmen 27-21 on a windy Saturday at GEHA Field as the Monarchs began their drive for their fifth straight X-Bowl title.
David Montgomery scored from 21 yards out as the Monarchs comfortably drove down the field on the opening series, and Keenum threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Demarcus Robinson in the second quarter as they went up 14-0, but it wasn't going to remain that easy, and after Taylor Heinicke got the Hitmen on the board with a 16-yard pass to Jamison Crowder, it wasn't as Keenum fumbled on the next series, and Jason Cabinda returned it to the 40 to set New York up towards halftime, and they moved near the redzone on a fourth down conversion from Heinicke to Pat Freiermuth for 12. The drive ended when Devante Bausby intercepted Heinicke, the first of four off of the ex-Monarch, the next one was returned 45 yards for a score by Xavier McKinney to put Kansas City up 21-7 early in the third.
In a rarity however the Monarchs didn't capitalize, scoring just 10 points off the four picks, and one was McKinney's touchdown return. Besides that, just a 22-yard Nick Folk field goal with 5:58 left to push the lead to 27-14. One drive stalled, and one was a turnover on downs as Robinson was stopped inches short of a first down by Grant Haley on fourth and 4 from the New York 29 early in the fourth.
Heinicke's third touchdown pass, and second to Crowder, made it a 27-21 game just ahead of the two-minute warning. Ron Rivera had planned to get an extra timeout with the two-minute mark and kicked off, but Trenton Gill's kick came up short of the endzone, and Jalen Virgil returned it to the 33, then two Montgomery runs forced the last two Hitmen timeouts before Keenum for all intents and purposes ended it with the third down conversion.
Beckham, playing his first game in just over a year, caught four passes for 61 yards in his Monarch debut. Terry McLaurin caught six passes for 85 yards as Keenum, usually a slow starter, had his second 300-yard game in the last three season openers.
J.K. Dobbins ran for 65 yards on 12 carries, and in the much-anticipated debut of Hitmen first round pick Kenneth Walker he was held to just 18 yards on seven carries but he had a big 26-yard catch-and-run on New York's final series.
