Enforcers 17 Sharks 14
CHICAGO, IL--Cam Jordan's return to the lineup was just what Rex Ryan was hoping for one week after getting into a shootout with Kyle Sloter, while the offense did just enough.
Don't let Ryan hear that last part, as because of their missed opportunies they had to sweat out a hail mary that came six yards short of a miracle game-winner. Nevertheless the Enforcers got the win over the Sharks 17-14 at Soldier Field on Saturday in a game that saw the Sharks lose Drew Lock to a head injury, yet saw Nathan Peterman nearly get the game-winner.
A touchdown run on a jet sweep by Allen Lazard and a Gardner Minshew pass to Jeremy Ruckert stood up as the only two of the game, but just barely because of mistakes and missed opportunities: The play after Joseph Charlton pinned the Enforcers against their own goal line, Minshew was sacked for a safety by Bradlee Anae. On Tampa's next series Jordan forced a D'Andre Swift fumble but somehow Joshua Ezeudu recovered for Tampa Bay to keep the drive going, although Swift was stopped by Foley Fatukasi on third and 1 and the Sharks took the points.
But the offensive miscues continued to pile up as Sam Ficken, who didn't miss a regular season attempt last year after joining the team at midseason, missed a 38-yarder just before halftime. David Long picked Peterman off on the last play of the third quarter, but the Enforcers turned it over on downs as Eno Benjamin was stopped by Oshane Ximines on 4th and 1 from the Sharks 17. Then after the defense once again held the Sharks to a field goal, the offense once again faltered as Jaquarii Roberson dropped what would have been a game-ending first down.
Jake Bailey arguably had the Enforcers' best offensive play of the second half, pinning the Sharks at the 2, and Chicago would need it as it took the Sharks th final 69 seconds to get to midfield, and even then they came up just short as hail mary from Peterman to Calvin Austin finished short of the mark, and Michael Ojemudia was able to get him before he could lateral it.
Lock was hit by Boye Mafe midway through the third quarter and left with what was called a head injury, but not a concussion. The hit was not flagged. Lock finished 17 of 26 for 206 yards and a pick. Peterman, who was in camp with the Enforcers last year before losing the backup battle to Luke Falk, finished 15 of 20 for 143 yards and an interception in his first regular season action since 2021 with San Antonio when he backed up rookie Jalen Hurts.
Minshew was 21 of 30 for 207 yards and a touchdown as the Enforcers sorely lacked the spark of their second half rally in Columbus last week, instead leaning on their run game and shutting down Tampa Bay's, holding them to just 63 yards. Jordan, who missed the opener, his first game missed of his magnificent 13-year career, returned with eight tackles and a sack.
