Colonels 22 Hitmen 17
EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ--Kyle Trask completed his first 12 passes on the way to his second straight 300-yard game, also running for what would turn out to the game-winning touchdown with 1:45 left in the third quarter as the Carolina Colonels made it to 3-0 for the first time ever, with a 22-17 victory over the Hitmen Saturday at MetLife Stadium.
Trask was on fire midway through the second quarter as the Colonels built a 16-3 lead on a Kenneth Gainwell touchdown run and a Trask scoring pass to Hunter Renfrow, but the Hitmen came to life and took the lead on a long run by J.K. Dobbins and a pass from Taylor Heinicke to Jamison Crowder, the latter coming just seven seconds before halftime.
The Colonels' offensive momentum was temporarily halted in the third quarter when Trask threw his first interception of the season, as he was picked off by Grant Haley. But the Hitmen could not capitalize, as they turned the ball over on downs as Pat Freiermuth dropped a Heinicke pass on fourth and 3 from the Carolina 35. The Colonels went 65 yards in nine plays and got the lead back on a ten-yard Trask run, the only points of the half as it turned out.
Rodrigo Blankenship had two of his three extra points blocked, one by Alton Robinson the other by Elandon Roberts, to keep the lead at five and potentially set the Hitmen up for a game-winning touchdown. That came to fruition as the Colonels turned the ball over twice on downs in the fourth quarter--one as Robinson shot through the line to stop Gainwell on fourth and 1 from the New York 23, the other with less than two minutes left when the Colonels went on fourth and 2 from their own 48 but Trask missed Jalen Nailor. The Hitmen looked poised to finally break through when Heinicke scrambled for 12 yards to the 36, but a holding call on Kylin Hill nullified it and they would ultimately end up well short of the first down. New York recorded just two first downs in the second half, both coming on the same drive which ended in an interception by Jamar Summers.
A week after throwing for just 84 yards, Heinicke threw for just 120 on 17 of 25 passing. J.K. Dobbins rushed 10 times for 56 yards and also caught six passes for 31 yards as the Hitmen fell to 0-3 for the first time since 2004. The Colonels rushed for just 68 yards after racking up 225 and 230 yards respectively in their first two contests.
