Bolts 27 Stampede 24(OT)
BIRMINGHAM, AL--The Birmingham Bolts returned to the league three weeks ago with a hard-fought overtime loss. So their return home was a perfect opportunity to flip the script.
And some lineup tweaks would result in their first win, as well as Ken Dorsey's first as head coach. Brandon Aubrey hit from 28 yards out with 2:30 left in overtime as the Bolts knocked off the San Antonio Stampede 27-24 at Protective Stadium, sending the Stampede to their second straight loss.
Cameron Artis-Payne rushed for 145 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries to lead a 265-yard effort for a team that was averaging a league-worst 68.3 yards/game coming in. His touchdown with 29 seconds left forced the extra period as the Bolts went 90 yards in 12 plays.
Birmingham also did a tremendous job of containing Jalen Hurts in his return to the Yellowhammer state, where he starred for the Crimson Tide for three years. Hurts was 25 of 30 for 271 yards and three touchdowns, but after rushing for 145 yards last week against Orlando he ran for just 12 yards and fumbled on San Antonio's opening series. After the Bolts got on the board first on a touchdown pass from Brandon Silvers to Artis-Payne, Hurts led back-to-back scroing drives, hitting Reggie Roberson and Justin Jackson for touchdowns to give San Antonio a 14-7 lead after one.
After both traded field goals in the second quarter, Silvers threw the game-tying touchdown pass to Simmie Cobbs, only for Hurts to answer with another to Jackson. Then a defensive stalemate ensued, with both quarterbacks throwing interceptions--including one by Hurts to Isaiah Johnson as the Stampede were driving to go up two touchdowns early in the fourth, until the Bolts' final drive.
Artis-Payne and Dexter Williams ripped up huge chunk runs to move the Bolts into San Antonio territory where they faced a third and 3 from the 40 just inside two minutes, where Silvers hit Artis-Payne for 12. Then after Ja'Sir Taylor sacked Silvers for a four-yard loss, Silvers hit Slade Bolden for 27 down to the 5, and on the next play Artis-Payne scored the touchdown that would send the game into overtime.
The Bolts drove all the way to the 2 before Silvers threw incomplete to George Pickens and Isaiah Likely to turn the ball over on downs, but backing up the Stampede, with not a lot on the ground (they rushed for just 91 yards), to their own goal line proved to be the smart strategy as Joe Schobert nearly threw down Miles Sanders for a game-winning safety on his game-high 16th tackle. Trey McBride was stopped short of a first down, forcing the Stampede to punt, setting up the Bolts' game-winning drive.
Silvers finished 29 of 38 for 276 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, not the cleanest performance but enough to deliver the win for to Birmingham, not only winless on the regular season but having been outscored 73-20 in two preseason losses.
Hurts played well despite the loss of Dez Bryant, who played just six snaps before leaving with an ankle injury. He was available but was not on the field for any of San Antonio's three overtime plays. Mecole Hardman caught three passes for 56 yards, and Roberson, an undrafted free agent from SMU, had two for 43 in Braynt's place including his first career touchdown.
