Rage 56 Colonels 21
ORLANDO, FL--On a rain-soaked Saturday, the Orlando Rage served notice.
That notice being that right next to the Magic Kingdom, Camping World is their kingdom, and the previously unbeaten Colonels got a big bowl of it.
The Rage scored on their two possessions while Carolina was stopped on downs and then fumbled and the rout was on. Brad Kaaya threw five touchdown passes, Damien Harris rusehd for two, and even Feleipe Franks got in on the fun--throwing one in the final minute--as the Rage waxed the Colonels 56-21 to not just move in, but blast their way into a tie for first place in the Independence Division.
With the Rage up 7-0 after a Kayya touchdown to Antonio Callaway the Colonels were poised to answer, facing a fourth and 1 at the Orlando 43, but Kwon Alexander blew up the right side of the line and made a beeline to Jordan Howard, stopping him for a loss of four, and just four plays later Orlando went up 14-0 on a long touchdown pass from Kaaya to Jalen Tolbert. The Colonels' next series only lasted two plays before Tee Higgins was hit hard by Shaun Wade and coughed up the ball, which Jordan Whitehead recovered. and the Rage went on the attack again, with Harris rushing for the first of his two scores to cap a five-play drive and put Orlando up 21-0.
Carolina finally answered with a Kenneth Gainwell touchdown, but not only did the Rage come back with a score the Colonels would punt on their final two possessions of the half, and when they got back in the endzone on a 15-yard score from Kyle Trask to Ian Thomas with 51 seconds left in the third it was 42-14.
Orlando's last score will be a point of contention for when the teams play the rematch in Carolina on April 29, as Franks threw an 18-yard touchdown to Tre Nixon with 28 seconds left. A defiant Kris Richard pointed out in the postgame that the only Rage starter among skill position players on the field at that point was Deebo Samuel, who lined up in the backfield for two snaps, and welcomed O'Connell to stop them, as the final Franks-led drive ate up nearly six minutes.
Trask was 23 of 29 for 268 yards with two scores, although both were in the second half with the Colonels down huge. But the battle of top two rushing teams in the league turned out be just as much of a mismatch as the Colonels rushed for just 64 yards to Orlando's 180, with Howard held to just 29 yards on 11 carries.
Orlando scored on eight of nine possessions and never punted, the only time they didn't score was when they ran out the clock at the end of the first half. The Rage, who came in the highest-scoring team in the league by three points over Kansas City, have scored 193 points in five games.
NEXT WEEK: ORL (4-1) at BIR 3/25; CAR (4-1) vs. TB 3/26
