Lonestars 20 Hitmen 12
EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ--Give the people what they want, as in Donovan Peoples-Jones.
With a third and 11 on the New York 46, on a rainy, windy day in East Rutherford with offense at a premium Luis Perez dropped back and fired a 24-yard strike to Peoples-Jones down to the 22, forcing the Hitmen to start using their timeouts as the Lonestars slogged out a 20-12 win over the woeful hosts Saturday at MetLife Stadium.
Perez was 28 of 41 for 339 yards and Peoples-Jones caught seven passes for 116 yards in the Lonestars' first consecutive victories of the season. It was Perez' first 300-yard game and Peoples-Jones' first 100-yard game of the year respectively.
The Lonestars built up a 17-6 lead at the half on a Samaje Perine touchdown run and a Perez touchdown pass to Kenny Yeboah, the first of his career, plus a Tristan Vizcaino field goal to beat the buzzer. In truth, the Lonestars could have stopped right there as the Hitmen once again struggled to get any offense, gaining just 84 yards--30 of it coming on one run by Kenneth Walker. And they literally almost did as their first three second half drives all ended in punts, and their next was a turnover on downs when Quinton Jefferson stopped Javonte Williams on a fourth and one from the New York 26 with under four minutes remaining.
The Hitmen failed to take advantage as Cole Kelley's pass to Jamison Crowder was batted away by Kyler Gordon, and three plays later Perez connected with Peoples-Jones for the big strike that effectively clinched the game. Vizcaino added a 36-yarder with the clock nearing zero to prevent any way possible from the Hitmen pulling out the unlikeliest of wins with a play such as Stefon Diggs' MetLife Miracle in 2017.
Such a play however would have been next to impossible as New York ended up with just 99 yards passing. Cole Kelley, in his third start, threw for just 115 yards, and just 41 heading into the lone Hitmen touchdown drive. On third and 16 with another three and out looming he hit Cam Phillips for 37 yards to the Dallas 31, and then would get them into the endzone on a 10-yard pass to Phillips to pull within five, but would stay there after he badly underthrew Walker on what would have been a walk-in two-point conversion.
No decision has been made for the Hitmen for next week, although it appears likely that Ron Rivera will stay with Kelley, after noting that they didn't turn the ball over for the first time in seven tries. Although they've scored 17 or less points in five of their seven games (all losses) Rivera also pointed out that Taylor Heinicke started three of those games. Matt Barkley has served as the third quarterback since leaving the Los Angeles game in week four with a knee injury and will likely remain in that capacity.
NEXT WEEK: DAL (3-4) bye--at STL 4/15; NY (1-6) at SD 4/9
