Monarchs 37 Reign 14
KANSAS CITY, MO--The Seattle Reign, looking to reverse a "home team trend"--in which the Reign won all three games at Lumen Field but were 0-4 away, started out on the right track. And then the other 57 minutes of game action happened.
Fueled by a pair of big plays early, Seattle drove inside the Kansas City redzone, but consecutive sacks by Aaron Lynch and Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah ended that. Mike Zimmer, not wanting to risk a long field goal with a new kicker in Nick Sciba, took a delay and punted. The strategy seemed sound, but Lachlan Edwards got too much of it and punted it into the endzone for a touchback, and these are the Monarchs we're takling about here. Predictably they went 80 yards in 14 plays and scored on a 10-yard D'Vonte Price run and never looked back in a 37-14 wipeout of the Reign Saturday at GEHA Field.
The Reign did close to within 10-7 on a Garrett Gilbert touchdown pass to Alex Collins, but Jalen Virgil took a short kickoff back 35 yards beyond midfield, and Kansas City was in the endzone in just three plays, with a 17-yard pass from Case Keenum to Brice Butler putting them up 10.
But it hardly stopped there.
Lynch recovered a Max Borghi fumble, and the Monarchs pushed it to 24-7 as Keenum hit Odell Beckham. The onslaught continued as, after a three and out, the Monarchs added three more on a 51-yard Nick Folk field goal for a 27-7 halftime lead.
Oh you thought we were done?
The opening series, what else, went for six as Keenum and Butler connected for the second time. Folk's third field goal then made it 37-7 before the fourth quarter came and stopped the bleeding. Collins, going as the lead back with Jamaal Williams and Tony Brooks-James both out, scored on a one-yard run with 3:43 left to end the scoring. He ran nine times for 30 yards with both Seattle scores.
Kansas City outrushed Seattle 139-57, led by David Montgomery rushing for 63 yards on 13 carries. Price, getting another shot at playing time with Michael Carter out with a knee injury, ran ten times for 38 yards and a touchdown. Keenum was 23 of 31 for 249 yards and three touchdowns, Colin Kaepernick finished up.
A week after a 426-yard performance that earned him XFL Offensive Player of the Week, Gilbert was just 14 of 27 for 199 yards and a touchdown.
NEXT WEEK: SEA (3-5) bye--at COL 4/23; KC (8-0) bye--at CHI 4/22
