Lonestars 34 Stallions 31
ST. LOUIS, MO--The last time the Monarchs were in the Show Me State they surprised the Monarchs (and everyone else) by jumping out to a 10-0 lead and holding them out of the endzone for the entire first half. They haven't lost in week five, but not since.
Granted the opposition in those last few weeks has been filled with the Hitmen, Mission, and now Stallions--five wins between them, but wins are wins, especially when you're Bob Stoops and you're staring at another season of Jeff Fisher jokes.
But give the assist to some terrible end-of-game clock management by Omarr Smith, which cost the Stallions a chance to rally at the end as the Lonestars won their third straight on a Javonte Williams touchdown run with nine seconds left.
Luis Perez, slowly catching fire as he did at the beginning of 2022, tossed his second straight 300-yard game and threw three touchdown passes in a close victory as neither team led by more than a touchdown. St. Louis took a 31-27 lead on a long pass from Jarrett Stidham to Romeo Doubs with 3:40 left, but that gave Perez all sorts of time as took the Lonestars 76 yards in 11 plays in a gotta-have drive. The key plays being a 24-yard pass interference penalty on Aaron Robinson as he was covering Terry Godwin on third and 3 from near midfield, and then a near-fatal fumble by Williams that Kenny Yeboah yanked away from a convoy of ball-hungry Stallions. After Williams was stopped for no gain on second down, he rushed for the game winner on third and 1 from the 4.
Smith explained in the postgame that he felt the defense was good enough to get another stop and force a fourth and goal, and just a few ticks left would limit Perez' options, but that might not be good enough as the Stallions fell to 2-6, and 14-26 since their playoff run in 2020.
Stidham effectively matched his counterpart, going 17 of 21 for 319 yards and three touchdowns. He took a shot to the ribs in the third quarter as Albert Huggins sacked him, but he stayed in the game and threw a touchdown pass to Cordarrelle Patterson on the next play. Doubs' four catches went for 121 yards including two scores of 38 and 51.
NEXT WEEK: DAL (4-4) vs. SA 4/23; STL (2-6) at CAR 4/22
