Colonels 37 Stallions 29
RALEIGH, NC--Anthony Becht didn't just have his team ready to compete in his first outing as head coach, his team had the Independence division-leading Colonels on the ropes well into the fourth quarter. But such is the case for St. Louis all year long, sealing the deal has been a different story.
Kyle Trask came alive in the final nine and a half minutes and Jordan Howard scored two touchdowns as the Colonels scored the final to avoid an upset loss in a trap game heading into their massive rematch with Orlando next Saturday night.
Becht had the Stallions ready to do anything, inclduing an onside kick to start the game. While unsuccesful, they held Carolina to a short Rodrigo Blankenship field goal. Then in the second quarter, after an impressive 55-yard boot by Matthew Wright with the rain, wind, and overall field conditions they tried again, with the same success. But this the Colonels couldn't even make so much as a first a down, as after Kenneth Gainwell began the drive with a four-yard run Trask threw three straight incompletions to turn the ball over on downs. That led to a nine-play drive and the first touchdown of the day to break the endzone stalemate, a 16-yard pass from Jarrett Stidham to Kyle Philips. The Colonels returned fire with a Jerome Ford touchdown run, his third in as many games, but Blankenship's miss kept it at 13-12.
The first Carolina mistake of the day proved fatal when, instead of merely running out the clock after getting the ball back with 33 seconds left until halftime on their own 20, they instead went for it and Trask was picked off by Tre Norwood near midfield. A couple of Stidham scrambles later he then hit Cordarrelle Patterson for 38 and a touchdown to push the lead to 20-12, Wright's third field goal of the day stretched it to 11.
The seemingly-lifeless Colonels got the bounceback they needed when Trask hit Tee Higgins on a 48-yard catch-and run, but it stayed at five as they would miss the first of three straight two-point attempts.
Wright's fourth and fifth field goals made it 29-18 with 9:31 left and then it was all Carolina, starting with Gainwell returning the ensuing kickoff to the Carolina 44, then a six-play drive capped the first of Howard's two scores. After the score the Stallions' offense went cold, going three and out after Stidham was sacked by Justin Madubuike. Then after Trask hit Ian Thomas for the go-ahead score Stidham was picked off by Drew Jackson, leading to Howard's second score.
A last-gasp drive ended at the 6 when Michael Carter kept Romeo Doubs from getting to the sideline so St. Louis could have run one more play.
Trask was 28 of 43 for 400 yards with two touchdowns and pick as the Colonels, whose home woes of the last three seasons are well-known, were just able to stay undefeated at home through five games. He outdueled Stidham, the league leader in completion percentage, who was 20 of 34 for 321 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Tee Higgins caught seven passes for 138 yards, Carolina's third game in the last four with a 100-yard receiver. Chris Herndon, making his Carolina debut after a season-opening eight-game suspension, caught one pass for eight yards and was also a target on one of the unsuccessful two-point tries.
NEXT WEEK: STL (2-7) at KC 4/30; CAR (8-1) vs. ORL 4/29
