Demons 42 Stampede 14
SAN ANTONIO, TX--It looked so easy against Birmingham, then so hard at home against Los Angeles. Now, with a huge showdown with Kansas City on deck, it looks easy again.
It didn't start that way, as Evan McPherson missed from 48 and Kyle Lauletta later was picked off in the redzone by J.C. Jackson, but Lauletta threw three touchdown passes, Javian Hawkins ran for two scores, and Scott Nelson took his first career interception to the house as the Demons came to San Antonio and blew out the Stampede 42-14 Saturday.
Hawkins, a second-year back out of Cal who has been inactive most of the year, sprung into action with Bo Scarbrough bangede up from last week and put the Demons up 14-7 with 33 seconds left until haiftime, capping an 11-play 95-yard drive. Then, with Jalen Hurts struggling, throwing his third multi-interception game of the season, Nelson tipped a pass to himself and took it 65 yards. Lauletta threw a pair of touchdown passes, to Christian Watson and Hakeem Butler to put the rout on at 35-7 going into the fourth quarter.
Hurts' second touchdown pass, a one-yarder to Jerreth Sterns, stopped the bleeding somewhat, but the Demons would play keep away after Joe Lombardi decided against an onside kick, starting at their own 9 and going 91 yards to paydirt, Hawkins' second touchdown of the game for the final margin.
Hurts had statisically his best game of the year, throwing for 329 yards and was 28 of 35--his first 300-yard game of the season and his fifth game where he's completed over 70% of his throws, but the Stampede couldn't consistently move the ball with Mecole Hardman and Brevin Jordan out injured for most of the game. Miles Sanders ran 12 times for 63 yards and also caught four passes for 70 and a touchdown as the Stampede have dropped six of eight after winning their first two, as well as their third straight home loss.
Marcell Ateman caught six passes for 82 yards and Watson caught a pair of touchdown passes as the Demons got back in the win column.
NEXT WEEK: SF (8-2) vs. KC 5/7; SA (4-6) at WAS 5/7
