Hitmen 30 Rage 24
ORLANDO, FL--For all the improvement week-over-week that Cole Kelley has shown, Ron Rivera has considered the hook on occasion--even if means going back to players that were benched (Taylor Heinicke) cause he threw too many interceptions. The closest came in the second quarter after a pick-six by Joey Blount put Orlando up 14-6.
In a true shocker, given the way the Hitmen's season has plummeted, it's a good thing he didn't. Kelley looked like the Taylor Heinicke of 2021 from that point forward and J.K. Dobbins ran for the go-ahead touchdown on a fourth-and-1 midway through the fourth quarter as the Hitmen snapped a five-game losing streak and stunned the Rage 30-24 on a rainy, overcast Saturday at Camping World Stadium, giving them their first home loss of the year and ending their nine-game home winning streak.
New York trailed 21-6 after Brad Kaaya hit Deebo Samuel and no one would have expected the Hitmen to do any different than play out the string, but Rivera nor his rookie quarterback would have none of it. The Hitmen went 68 yards in ten plays, converting a 4th and 5 near midfield along the way, and pulling to within 21-13 on a 33-yard strike from Kelley to Cam Phillips. Then the Hitmen got the first of two Orlando turnovers as Nigel Bradham recovered a mishandled snap by Kaaya. That would only result in a Graham Gano field goal, but the momentum was clearly beginning to shift, even with the half coming up.
The Rage added three on a Lirim Hajrullahu field goal, but the crowd almost sensed what was up when they implored Kris Richard to go for it on fourth and 3 from the 14. Indeed, the Rage would not score again as the Hitmen would put together a long drive spilling over into the fourth quarter, with Ryan Becker catching a 14-yard touchdown pass from Kelley to pull New York to within 24-22 after Kelley threw incomplete looking for Amari Rodgers on the two-point try.
A quick three and out later, as Kaaya was sacked by Johnathan Hankins, the Hitmen mounted the winning drive, going 63 yards in 11 plays. After a successful Orlando challenge resulted in fourth and 1 from the 18, Dobbins swept right and was gone for the easy score, his seventh of the year, and he added the two points himself to put New York up 6.
Orlando would somewhat controversially punt, but the strategy worked out as they would hold, and then mount possibly the game-winning drive. But with the Rage just across midfield Kaaya's short pass was picked off by Percy Butler, and then a 12-yard run by Dobbins would seal the deal as the Hitmen got some measure of revenge for their loss to Orlando in a winner-take-all regular season finale last June.
Kaaya finished 15 of 32 for 249 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, passing 3000 for the season on his last competed pass, a 10-yarder to Antonio Callaway. Playing without Damien Harris, Orlando rushed for just 44 yards, with Trey Sermon's 31 on eight carries leading the way.
Kelley threw for a season-high 297 yards and Dobbins rushed for 74 on 15 carries as the Hitmen picked up their second win at Camping World Stadium in the last three outings. The Rage, coming in two behind Carolina and a game behind in the division tiebreaker, have lost three of four.
