Xtreme 27 Demons 24
CARSON, CA--Is it time to panic in the Bay City yet?
After last week's monster 456-yard effort against Chicago Desmond Ridder threw for a more modest 214 yards and Darrell Henderson rushed for 115 yards as the Xtreme capped a sweep of their former division rivals 27-24 at Dignity Health Sports Park Saturday, sending the first-place Demons to their third loss in four games while winning their sixth straight themselves.
Not that San Francisco isn't showing up in this four-game stretch, but a pair of fourth down failures--one a questionable playcall--would be the difference. Late in the third quarter with Los Angeles up 24-17, Javian Hawkins took a pitch on fourth and 2 and was ruled just inches short of the marker. Then after an Xtreme punt, the Demons, from roughly the same part of the field, would come up short yet again, this time throwing on fourth and 1 as Kyle Lauletta failed to connect with Keelan Doss. This time the Xtreme answered by driving for a Matt McCrane field goal. A late Demons touchdown cut it to three as Lauletta hit Cade Otton, his eighth of the season, to bring the Demons within three, setting up a last gasp.
Henderson's 115-yard day was his fourth of the season, but saved his best for last. He recovered Evan McPherson's onside, then after Ridder unwittingly gave the Demons the equivalent of a free timeout by throwing the ball away, setting up a third and 6 on the Demons 42 he started left and cut back inside, powering his way forward to get the six yards and enable the Xtreme to run the clock out.
The Demons led 10-3 on Lauletta's long touchdown pass to Hakeem Butler, but they would also turn the ball over three straight times beginning on a screen pass for Hawkins that went too far and was picked off by Jurrell Casey. Three plays later Ridder hit Khalil Shakir for the tying touchdown, and after the second turnover when Sterling Weatherford recovered a Marcell Ateman fumble, Artavis Pierce capped a seven-play 64-yard drive with a 12-yard touchdown run and the lead.
Lauletta was picked off for the second time by Amani Oruwariye to complete the turnover trifecta, but did recover to finish 24 of 37 for 333 yards, his third straight 300-yard game, passing the 3000-yard mark on the long touchdown pass to Butler. Hawkins ran 11 times for 72 yards.
Ridder threw a pair of touchdown passes, including the go-ahead strike to Dazz Newsome for his first career touchdown catch. The Xtreme's six-game winning streak sets the new franchise record, passing their five straight in 2001.
NEXT WEEK: LA (9-3) at STL 5/21; SF (8-4) vs. SD 5/21
