Sharks 27 Hitmen 19
TAMPA, FL--On the way to a blowout loss Ron Rivera, flummoxed by porous quarterback play all year, turned to another quarterback. Surprisingly, it was the one who put him here.
Equally as surprising, that blowout loss didn't end up as such a blowout. Yes, Taylor Heinicke threw an interception, but it was a desperation heave with the clock running down and the Hitmen out of timeouts, with Andrew Booth picking off the errant pass allowing the Tampa Bay Sharks to secure their fourth straight win, 27-19 over New York Saturday at Raymond James Stadium.
The Sharks were rolling, leading New York 27-3 after three and it looked like the Hitmen were going to do well enough in the fourth quarter just to make it out of Tampa as something more than shark patties. But Heinicke answered Drew Lock's touchdown pass to Elijah Moore with a nine-play, 75-yard drive and one-yard keeper for the touchdown, staying at 27-9 after Heinicke couldn't connect with Jamison Crowder for two points. The Sharks however could not make a first down from that point on, and another score--a pass from Heinicke to Pat Freiermuth on fourth and goal from the 9--made it 27-16. Another three and out was follwed by a field goal, then nervousness set in as Tampa's third straight failed series gave it back to New York with 47 seconds left.
But time was not the Hitmen's ally as J.K. Dobbins caught a screen pass and went 11 yards for the first down, but failed to get out of bounds, thus forcing Heinicke into a probably-prematurely-thrown deep ball that Booth picked off for his second of the year.
Lock was 15 of 23 for 251 yards and two scores but it was nearly obscured by Tampa's near-collapse in the fourth quarter. Nonetheless Lock has been on fire during the Sharks' winning streak, with a passer rating of 122.2. Calvin Austin caught three passes for 77 yards and Nyheim Hines ran 17 times for 60 yards as Tampa Bay played without De'Veon Smith.
Cole Kelley started the game for New York and was just 7 of 14 for 64 yards before Heinicke replaced him in the second half.
