Sharks 31 Colonels 10
TAMPA, FL--Could it be that the Tampa Bay Sharks are the team no one would want to face if they were alive in the playoff hunt?
Of course a caveat being that the Independence champion Colonels were clearly in safe mode as they get ready to host a playoff game in two weeks but the Sharks made it six in a row with a 31-10 pasting of the Colonels Saturday at Raymond James Stadium, securing at the very least their first .500 season since moving back to Florida.
Drew Lock wasn't at his best, throwing three interceptions, including a brutal endzone pick that Jamar Summers took off a deflection to end a possession that ate up the game's first 11 minutes, one that served as a brief reminder why the former #1 pick still has an uncertain future. Tampa Bay's next series ended in another Summers interception as Lock, who had come in with one interception in his previous 219 passes now had two in his first nine. This one led to a score, as Kenneth Gainwell took it in from six yards out.
Then would you believe the rest of the day not only belonged to the Sharks, but in dominant fashion?
Lock came back with a pair of touchdown passes in less than two minutes to put Tampa Bay up 14-7: an 18-yard pass to Elijah Moore, and then a 42-yard rumble by Ricky Seals-Jones. His third scoring pass, second to Moore, made it 21-7 early in the third. Carolina 's only second half points on a late Dustin Hopkins field goal, and Lock, who still potentially was playing in his final home game with the Sharks, engineered one last scoring drive, with his fourth touchdown pass, tying a season-high, a 15-yarder to Nyheim Hines making it 31-10.
Kyle Trask was 5 of 11 for 33 yards and was sacked twice in what will likely be his final regular season action. Ryan Willis, the likely starter in Birmingham next week, was 9 of 17 for 79 yards. Kevin O'Connell wouldn't confirm it in the postgame but it's trending that way as not only is the goal to preserve Trask, but the Colonels' offensive line as well as Dalton Risner and David Moore both left for stretches before coming back. They were also playing without starting center Cam Jurgens.
Playing all four running backs the Sharks racked up 251 yards rushing, led by rookie Shermari Jones, in just his third game of the season, going for 142 yards on 13 carries. Expected to flounder since the trade of D'Andre Swift the Sharks have actually done the opposite, averaging 180 yards on the ground in the five games without him at just over five yards per carry.
The Sharks outgained the Colonels 539-186.
NEXT WEEK: CAR (12-3) at BIR 6/11; TB (8-7) at ORL 6/10
