Xtreme 27 Mission 13
SAN DIEGO, CA--Last year Mark Helfrich and Eric Bieniemy were part of the same X-Bowl champion coaching staff, Saturday they ended their first seasons as respective head coaches in very different ways. Although neither will be moving onto the playoffs, one finished with a very Kansas City-like 12 wins, one finished with a disappointing 12 losses--not unexpected, but disappointing for they way they were never really in the majority of their games. The season finale was no exception.
Desmond Ridder capped off a spectacular rookie season by throwing a pair of touchdown passes--his 29th and 30th of the year, and Darrell Henderson ran for 103 yards as the Los Angeles Xtreme dismissed their southern California rivals the San Diego Mission 27-13 at SnapDragon Stadium, finishing 12-4 after a 1-2 start.
The Xtreme charged to a 17-3 lead at the half, a nearly flawless first half marred only by an interception by Brandon Facyson to halt a scoring drive. But, par for the course in San Diego's season of disappointments, they punted four times in the first half--three three-and-outs--and thus it ended being only a temporary diversion as on the next series Ridder threw a 24-yard stike to Tyler Higbee for the score.
The futility continued as Chad Henne, playing his final game after a 16-year career, would not only not go out a winner he wouldn't even go out unscathed as he threw interceptions on consecutive possessions. Coby Bryant picked off a short pass after penalties had taken the Mission from the redzone nearly out a field goal range, and Jevon Holland intercepted what would be the final pass of Henne's career in the endzone on the final series.
The Mission did get the last score on a pick-six by Kyzir White off of P.J. Walker, but it almost underscored just how painful the Mission's finale was as opposed to their exciting last-second win over St. Louis in week one. San Diego gained just 258 yards of offense, with Henne going out 19 of 34 for 197 yards and two interceptions. The Xtreme topped that by over 200 yards, with Ridder throwing for 241 yards and the run game showing up as well, led by Henderson as well as Artavis Pierce' 11th touchdown of the year. Jurrell Casey, retiring as well after a 13-year career, had a sack to finish his final season with six.
San Diego ends the season with six straight losses, and four straight at home after a 3-1 start. With Henne retiring and backup Kevin Hogan not expected back, the anticipation will build over the offseason for the debut of Malik Willis, as Bieniemy stuck to the plan of sitting him the entire season. Isiah Pacheco rushed for just 33 yards on ten carries but will end the season as a member of the 1000-yard club, the only rookie back to do so.
NEXT WEEK: LA (12-4) end of season; SD (4-12) end of season
