Colonels 35 Enforcers 28
RALEIGH, NC--Kyle Trask raised some eyebrows this week, as he became the first quarterback since 2018 to be named first team-all XFL over Case Keenum--yeah, no pressure there.
So after the Enforcers rolled over the Colonels in the second quarter to a 28-14 halftime lead, the former #1 pick declared right then and there the Colonels were moving on to Seattle next week for X-Bowl XXIII. And then, despite Trask's lone miscue--a tipped ball was picked off by David Long, the defense rose up in the second half, forcing two punts and two turovers on downs, including a defensive stand in the redzone in the final seconds, while Trask did his thing. Trask threw three touchdown passes, includung a 96-yard drive as the Colonels rallied from a two-touchdown deficit at halftime and punched their ticket to their second X-Bowl, beating the Enforcers 35-28 Saturday at Carter-Finley Stadium.
Carolina will take on Kansas City, just as they did in 2009 in Detroit.
The Colonels took the ball at their 4 with just under 10 minutes left in the third quarter in a must-situation, but Trask played it totally cool as a pair of runs by Howard and Kenneth Gainwell moved the sticks, and a facemask penalty against David Long helped get the Colonels out of their own end and run their offense. Chipping down the field Trask hit Gainwell out of the backfield for seven on a third down then hit Hunter Renfrow for 16 before hooking up with him again two plays later for a touchdown that brought it to 28-21. After Eno Benjamin was stopped on fourth and 1 from the Carolina 43, the Colonels took just four plays, including a 48-yard catch-and-run by tee Higgins, to get the tying score as Trask hit Gainwell. Trask then hit Higgins for the go-ahead score with 1:56 left.
The Enforcers quickly got into the redzone, but Minshew, who had a franchise playoff-high 406 yards passing, missed a pair of throws to end the game.
Chicago took a 21-14 lead midway through the second on a Kennedy Brooks touchdown, and after a defensive hold, went 95 yards in 12 plays to push the lead to 14 just before the half on a Minshew touchdown to Trent Taylor. But it was all Carolina after that as the offense was shut down in the second half as Carolina outgained Chicago 248-146 over the final 30 minutes.
After a pair of three-and-outs to open the game Chicago got on the board first with a 33-yard strike from Gardner Minshew to Jaquarii Roberson. Minshew's second touchdown pass, a seven-yard toss to Brooks, put them back on top after a Jordan Howard touchdown run tied it. Carolina tied it again on the first of Trask's four touchdown passes, a 13-yarder to Chris Herndon.
D'Andre Swift, the big midseason pickup for the Enforcers who had eight touchdowns after the trade from Tampa Bay, ran for just eight yards on eight carries as Benjamin led the team with seven for 29. Tyler Johnson caught six passes for 112 yards, joing Terrence Edwards as the only other 100-yard receiver in a playoff game for the Colonels.
Kevin O'Connell, after winning X-Bowl IX for the Colonels as quarterback, now takes them back in his third season as coach. Carolina has won both home playoff games in their history, also beating New York 37-13 in 2009. The Enforcers have lost their last five (non X-Bowl) road playoff games.
NEXT WEEK: CHI (9-8) end of season; CAR (13-4) X-Bowl XXIII vs. KC (Seattle) 6/25
