Kansas City, MO.
AP - COTTRELL'S NIGHTMARE: Monarchs' head coach Ted Cottrell had enjoyed an off-season of signings and trades up until this point. The operative word here being "had." Cottrell's season turned into a nightmare this week when he received a call from people in NFL Europe informing him of a parent's worst fears.
His son T.J., a young. promising tight end who had a strong chance to make the Minnesota Vikings this year and playing for a team in Germany, was beaten on the streets with a baseball bat. More horrifying was the fact that somebody wound up and hit TJ full swing with the bat and shattered a portion of face.
According to Cottrell (this is the information he received from NFL Europe officials, NFL Security and even FBI officials), his son and a few other players were hanging at a club when a player allocated by the Chiefs got into a fracas with the bouncers. Cottrell was told TJ was trying to play peacemaker (aren't those the guys who always take the fall?). TJ calmed down the other player but the ignorant young man walked away only to come back minutes later with more players. He then spit on a bouncer and tried to push the fight. The bouncers grabbed a bat, club and even a sword and chased the group of players.
Unfortunately, they caught up to the group and beat three of the young men pretty severely. TJ has since had three titanium plates inserted into his face and big Ted says he's having some pretty fierce flashbacks of the incident. They have already got him working with a therapist to help erase the memory of the beating.
Owner/GM Sean Calliard had this to say at a press conference at Arrowhead, "All of us here feel for Coach and his family at this time. We have given Ted extended leave so that he can be with his son at this time of need. Eric (Mangini - defensive coordinator) will be taking over Head coaching responsibilities until he returns. We wish Coach the best and our prayers go out to the Cottrells at this time."
