Monarchs 55 Demons 31
KANSAS CITY, MO--Those familiar with the Monarchs/Demons rivalry know that a few 'here it comes' moments have turned the tide of late. This time, it erased a strong first-half effort that had the Demons thinking they had finally broken through against the eight-time champs.
From the 3:15 mark on, the Monarchs scored 48 of their 55 points and ran away to an easy win on what seems like the annual banner celebration at Arrowhead, although with the tragic events of this week during the Chiefs' Super Bowl parade it was more than a bit subdued.
Case Keenum's two-yard touchdown pass to Michael Carter tied the game up at 14 at that point, the last 3:15 of the half was truly nothing that could be foreseen. Kyle Lauletta, who was having a pretty strong game before a pair of second-half turnovers undid him, moved San Francisco down the field quickly and tossed his second touchdown pass, hitting Trevon Grimes to give the Demons a 21-14 lead, which lasted all of about 35 seconds before Keenum kept it himself for the tying score with 43 seconds left.
The Demons might have done well to take it to half at that point, as they failed to run out the half following a couple of incomplete passes, then the worst case scenario unfolded as KaVontae Turpin, who proved that it might not be a good idea to kick to him even if there are just a handful of ticks remaining, returned the ball 87 yards for the go-ahead score.
But the onslaught had just begun, 'here it comes'.
Tre Tucker took the second half kickoff back 100 yards, the first week one return for a touchdown in a decade, as the Monarchs, who less than a quarter before were the ones playing catch-up, were suddenly adding to their lead, and, as if to say 'of course', Xavier McKinney intercepted Lauletta on the Demons' first play from scrimmage, cashing in with a Nick Folk field goal. When it was over, in that span of 5:26 Kansas City went from down 14-7 to up 38-21, a lightning-quick 31-7 jolt reminiscent of their romps over San Francisco in the 2020 and 2023 playoffs.
Sure enough, an Evan McPherson field goal was answered by a 58-yard Carter touchdown run. Carter, taking the lead with Kareem Hunt on IR with a groin injury, rushed for a career-high 122 yards. Keenum was 20 of 24 for 239 yards and threw two touchdown passes.
Lauletta was 26 of 45 for 315 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Grimes, Marcell Ateman, and Christian Watson all had receiving scores and Tyrion Davis-Price added 67 yards on 14 carries with a touchdown.
However, this all came amidst the backdrop of what happened two days before at Union Station. A moment of silence was held before the game, as will be the case in the other seven games this weekend. Kansas City mayor Quinton Lucas, in attendance at the game, commented "many people are upset today, and understandably a lot of (people) stayed home after what happened this past Wednesday. We celebrated one championship, we were supposed to have another, didn't happen for obvious reasons. It was a very quiet low-key, almost more of a healing than a football game. For those that came tonight I hope we did our part and, while this didn't bring anything back, at least pointed everything in the direction that we need to go to start healing".
