To the Washington Glory: CB Ronyell Whitaker
To the Chicago Enforcers: WAS 2006 third-round draft choice
Perhaps now feeling the ill-effects of trading Ahmad Hawkins to Birmingham on draft day with Dyshod Carter out for the next month, the Glory gladly reciprocated (although with the Enforcers this time) for Whitaker, who was stuck fighting for PT with Justin Miller and Corey Webster now in the fold.
Whitaker was drafted in the third round in 2003 with the idea of moving into the starting lineup eventually as the trio of Corey Ivy, Troy Saunders, and Jason Bray was eventually broken up, and playing time prospects for Whitaker looked good with Saunders missing the first six games of the year with a bad knee, but Steve Smith played most of the time in the nickel. Whitaker played more in 2004 after Smith signed with San Francisco as a free agent and had an interception return for a touchdown against newest teammate Joe Hamilton last July 17.
The Glory's corner situation is dramatically different from last year: with Carter out, neither starting cornerback from 2004 is around at the moment. First round pick Antonio Perkins, not expected to start as a rookie, has done a good job in his first two games. The team may likely start Todd Howard, last year's nickel who other than Fred White is the only cornerback on the team with any starting experience, in Jacksonville on Sunday night and then work Whitaker in.
