Enforcers 23 Colonels 20
CHICAGO, IL--Both of last year's meetings between the Colonels and the Enforcers, both in Carolina, went pretty similarly, with the home team either rallying in the second half or emerging from a tough back-and-forth scrum on a walkoff field goal.
So the Enforcers did both.
Although Carolina never led by more than 13-7 late in the second quarter, it did provide a glimpse of how the Enforcers were going to pull this one out. Gardner Minshew hurried them down the field in eight plays, and Jonathan Garibay hit from 38 to close Chicago to within three. Then Minshew did it again, this time squeezing in a 13-play drive over the final 2:50, and Garibay nailed a much shorter 22-yarder to send the Enforcers to 2-0 on the young season and drop the defending Eastern Conference champions to 0-2 after a 23-20 win at Soldier Field Saturday.
It looked like there might be plenty of scoring in this one early, as both sides reached the endzone on their first possession. Carolina was quicker, with Jayden Reed returning the opening kick 33 yards to the 42, and then he caught a 20-yard pass from Kyle Trask to cap an openiong five-play 58-yard drive. Chicago was more deliberate on theirs, as they went 77 yards in 15 plays, capping it off on a D'Andre Swift touchdown run from seven yards out.
After field goals dominated the second quarter, the Enforcers took their first lead at 17-13 on Swift's second touchdown, and pushed it to 20-13 as Garibay hit from 25. The Colonels responded with a 10-play 63-yard drive and a Gus Edwards touchdown to tie it with 13:42 left. But then a four-snap sequence doomed Carolina.
On second and 6 inside the 40, Greg Little was whistled for a false start. That was followed by what would have been a 14-yard completion to Tyler Johnson for a first down that was wiped out by a hold on Ben Powers. Trask mishandled the snap for a loss of four, and then Boye Mafe sacked him for 11 yards, completing the sequence that took Carolina out of field goal range back to near their own 30, forcing a punt.
The Enforcers methodically moved down the field, converting a fourth and 1 just acoss the midfield stripe with under a minute left. The longest plays of the drive were a pair of ten-yard passes to Amon-Ra St. Brown and Josh Downs, with Swift carrying six times for 22 yards. Kennedy Brooks' 18-yard run ensured a chipshot to win it.
Swift rushed for 124 yards and his two scores were his second and third of the season in a game where both teams leaned on their running game. Edwards ran for 124 yards as well for Carolina while Kenneth Gainwell added 34 on five carries. Downs and St. Brown ended up as the only two receivers with over 50 yards receiving as both Minshew and Trask were under 2o0 yards.
