Hitmen 52 Stampede 21
EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ--A matchup where both teams came in down their all-everything running back started with Kazmeir Allen taking the opening kick 98 yards for a touchdown, and, on a rainy Saturday at MetLife Stadium, it was off for the Hitmen from there.
Kenneth Walker ran for 102 yards and two touchdowns, including a 59-yard run, and the Hitmen had a surprisingly easy time in their first game without J.K. Dobbins, crushing the Stampede 52-21.
Colin Kaepernick was just 14 of 28 for 172 yards and was sacked five times as San Antonio clearly missed their star more, rushing for just 82 yards as a team with Tyler Goodson just 31 yards on 20 carries. He was stopped twice on 4th and 1 as, after his touchdown tied the game nearly six minutes into the first quarter, it was punt or turnover on downs until Kaepernick's short touchdown pass to Grant Calcaterra with one tick left in the third stopped the bleeding, by then lifting it to 35-14.
Garrett Gilbert was hardly legendary in his home debut for New York, finishing just 13 of 25 for 203 yards, but he did finish with three touchdown passes. His first, a 29-yard strike to Jamison Crowder, put the Hitmen up 14-7 and Walker's two scores stretched the lead to 28-7.
That was more than enough as Gilbert threw two more to pile on.
Both backups finished the game as Hendon Hooker, the second round pick who recovered from a torn ACL, completed both passes for 19 yards, although a strip-sack by Otito Ogbonnia that J.C. Jackson recovered for a touchdown got him off to a less-than-stellar start. Kaleb Eleby completed one of two passes for seven yards.
K.J. Henry had two of the five sacks in the win.

Capitols 31 Enforcers 24
COLUMBUS, OH--Over the last few months, Brian Flores made a significant number of decisions. His latest has the Columbus Capitols in waters that, let's face it, outside the team borders was a little hard to comprehend.
Yet, after Israel Abanikanda scored what turned out to be the game-winning touchdown with 5:37 left, here we are.
After last year's tough season-opening loss at the Horseshoe, which ended up setting the tone for the Capitols' usual expansion-team futility, Flores wasn't interested in a repeat--much as he wasn't interested in running back last year's roster (a signinficant number of starters were either turfed or demoted) or going 1-15 again (which thanks to two wins before the clocks roll forward won't be happening). And while the points were a little hard to come by at first, it was evident from the opening kickoff as the Enforcers were held to pair of three-and-outs to start, the latter of the literal variety as Jakorian Bennett picked Gardner Minshew off and set up the first score of the game, a 26-yard Tanner Brown field goal for a 3-0 lead.
The Enforcers took the lead late in the second quarter as Minshew hit a long fly to Josh Downs for a 30-yard score but this was the Capitols' night, and they would not be denied. Will Levis, coming off Offensive Rookie of the Week honors despite a loss, completed five of six passes, including the go-ahead touchdown pass to Breece Hall. Then, the turning point came. Godwin Igwebuike, who in hindsight should have probably downed the ball with just 13 seconds left, brought it out across the 20 but was walloped by Elijah Lee and lost the ball. Travis Jones scooped it up, and on the next play Levis, sensing the momentum, went deep and hit Golden Tate in stride for a 22-yard touchdown pass. The pandemonium was like Ohio State over Michigan.
Back in the old Jim Tressel/Urban Meyer days.
Rex Ryan's crew had no time for an upstart feel-good story, as Chicago went 80 in nine plays and cut it to three on a one-yard D'Andre Swift touchdown run, then Jonathan Garibay tied it from 24 one play after Bennett nearly picked Minshew off again.
The back-and-forth continued in the final period when Levis hit Tate from three yards out, but just 57 seconds later it was tied again as one play after Swift got loose for 55 yards, Minshew hit Denzel Mims for the tying score.
And if this was one player's drive, it was the fourth-rounder out of Pitt who was brought in to be a complementary back to the returning Hall but on this night was much more. He started by returning the kickoff near midfield, then two plays later ran for ten to pick up a first down. He carried twice more for ten yards before Columbus got a pass interference on third and 9 to move them down to the 3 where Abanikanda took it in.
The Enforcers tried to match once again, but they looked doomed from the start as Minshew was nearly picked off by Kendall Sheffield--who played in 14 games (including playoffs) for Chicago last year. Then left tackle Zachary Thomas picked up consecutive penalties, one wiping out a screen pass to Swift that resulted in a first down, and the Enforcers would eventually punt on 4th and 15. Not a bad gamble with Ryan's usual stout D, but no stopping Columbus this night. Hall and Abanikanda each picked up first downs that would ice it, as the Enforcers would have time for just two hail mary attempts by Minshew.
Levis started just 1 of 5 for 13 yards and a had a bad snap exchange which lost six but came back to finish with three touchdowns on 12 of 23 passing. Hall and Abanikanda combined for 144 yards rushing and Tate caught five for 59 and two scores. Minshew, without all-XFL wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown, was just 15 of 28 for 204 yards. Swift rushed for 191 yards and already his fourth touchdown of the season. Downs had seven catches for 91 yards.
The Capitols' win ensures that all four Liberty teams will have a winning record through three weeks of play.

Demons 48 Glory 17
WASHINGTON, DC--While one San Francisco team came up short a few weeks ago, another might just be beginning. Sure, they didn't play their best ball from that point on, but they looked like a team who began the season by going toe to toe with the league's all-time winner for the better part of a half, picking up from there.
Kyle Lauletta threw a pair of first half touchdown passes and Tony Fields ran back a fumble 39 yards for a score as the Demons demolished the Glory at Audi Field Sunday.
Washington had seemed to survive the initial San Francisco onslaught as Kyle Allen hit Jason Brownlee from 26 yards out to cut the lead to 14-7. Then the Glory got a gift when Lauletta fumbled the snap, and Jose Ramirez recovered to get things started as they looked to tie the game.
Or so that was the plan. Kevin Atkins strip-sacked Allen on the next play and Fields took it all the way for the touchdown that put put San Francisco back up 14 and Washington wouldn't so much as get within double digits. Even when they did, on an Allen pass to Preston Williams the Demons responded in rapid fire. Christian Watson took a short pass for Lauletta and turned it into a 58-yard catch-and-run down to the 5. Two plays later Hunter Luepke barreled in for the first of two scores as the Demons led 31-14 at the half.
It would have been merely a great road win at that point, instead it turned into a laugher.
Tyrion Davis-Price went 40 yards on San Francisco's first offensive play of the second half, and although it only led to an Evan McPherson field goal everyone knew, as Davis-Price would score on the next series on Lauletta's third touchdown pass. Davis-Price finished with 86 yards on 18 carries.
Allen finished 30 of 46 for 341 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, but most of it was playing from behind as the Demons, despite playing without Justin Houston and Carlos Watkins, sacked him seven times, two each by Davin Bellamy and Willie Jefferson.
Watson became the Demons' third different 100-yard receiver already this season, joining Marcell Ateman and Trevon Grimes. The 2023 Offensive ROY also had another big day returning kicks, as he returned three for 102 yards.

Lonestars 31 Bolts 6
BIRMINGHAM, AL--So much for that home-opening spark.
A.J. McCarron took over the starting job from Taylor Heinicke this week, and the Alabama legend, a week after filling the stat sheet, would repeat his performance from Tampa and possibly lift the Bolts into the win column with a much-needed upset win as the season is once again getting away from Ken Dorsey.
Um, about that. 104 yards, less than half his total in less than one half of football in the rain. Oh and a his final pass, a six-yard toss to Damien Harris, just pushed him over the century mark as the Lonestars powered to their first 3-0 start since 2013 by embarrassing the Bolts Sunday at Protective Stadium.
Javonte Williams, who ran for 140 yards a week ago, started off with five straight carries, including a fourth down conversion. Then, after offsetting penalties wiped out a ten-yard pass to Albert Okwuegbunam, saving them a second fourth down decision of the drive, Williams took a screen pass from Luis Perez and turned into 33 yards. Perez hit Randall Cobb for the score, and honestly the Lonestars wouldn't need much else.
The Bolts had their chance when, after Brandon Aubrey got them on the board with a 43-yard field goal, they got a special teams turnover as Drew Sanders recovered a Donovan Peoples-Jones fumble, but to no avail as the Bolts went three-and-out and Aubrey missed from 52. Perez then led a seven-play drive and hit Williams from six yards out for a 14-3 lead.
Birmingham turned the ball over on their next series as Armani Watts picked off a pass that was initially ruled incomplete, and Dallas added a Tristan Vizcaino field goal before halftime.
Perez, returning to Birmingham where he played for the AAF Iron in 2019, was 19 of 27 for 215 yards and three touchdowns, putting a wrap on the game with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Jonathan Adams with 3:22 left. Williams finished with 124 yards on 26 carries, and had touchdowns both rushing and receiving.
The Bolts gained just 178 yards of offense, after finishing with 503 last week.

Monarchs 36 Sharks 25
KANSAS CITY, MO--As Matt Nagy notched the first of what he would love to be his next 100 wins, this was definitely one of them.
Maybe it was playing without Odell Beckham, maybe it was playing in 20-25 MPH winds with gusts that reached almost 40 but the Monarchs didn't look as deadly efficient as they did in conquests of San Francisco and San Diego, scoring just one lone touchdown over three quarters before a pair of one-yard runs added to their total in a final period free-for-all as the Monarchs still took care of business with a 36-25 win at Arrowhead Stadium.
Had Beckham played it probably wouldn't have made much of a difference as the wind would neutralize both teams' vertical game, acting as almost another defender. Indeed Drew Lock went deep for Calvin Austin on the second play of the game and it fell away from Austin, who went catchless on four targets.
The Monarchs compensated by going run-heavy on their first series, and their longest pass play of the game ended up being a 33-yard screen to Michael Carter. Nick Folk's first of five field goals finally broke the scoreless stalemate early in the second quarter.
The wind affected Lock clearly more than it did Case Keenum. A fourth and 2 pass to De'Veon Smith carried and fell out of his reach, which had an effect on the Sharks' next 4th and 2, in which Todd Haley took the points on a Michael Badgley 26-yarder. Then Demarcus Robinson fielded a squib kick at the 29 and pitched it to Tre Tucker, who took it to midfield, finally untracking the Monarchs as they went five plays to punch it in, on a five-yard Carter run with 27 seconds left.
After two more Folk field goals made it 19-3 the Sharks got back in the game on a Lock touchdown pass to Elijah Moore on the first play of the fourth quarter, and a two-point run by Jordan Howard made it 19-11. The Monarchs settled for another field goal, and then Haley, maybe thinking he should have gone for it late in the first half in retrospect, rolled the dice on fourth and 1 from his own 21. But the worst case happened when Jordan Elliott punished the interior offensive line and knocked Howard back a yard. The Monarchs' drive was hardly easy though, as they would have fourth down on the goal line themselves. But Keenum easily took it in behind his mass of blockers and the Monarchs would have their separation.
Even if it would end up taking the Sharks a little while to go away.
Lock ran twice for 45 yards on the next drive, and the Sharks got a De'Veon Smith touchdown to get to within 29-18, but another attempt for Austin got caught in the wind, setting up another Monarchs' touchdown drive as this time Zach Moss did the honors from a yard out.
A 49-yard pass from Lock to Elijah Moore finished the scoring. Lock finished 14 of 29 for 246 yards and two touchdowns, he was sacked six times and ran five times for 81 yards. Moore caught five passes for 151 yards.
Keenum finished an efficient-if-unspectacular 20 of 33 for 225 yards. Carter ran for 122 yards on 24 carries.

Xtreme 28 Stallions 23
CARSON, CA--While Darrell Henderson stands to make a few bucks this summer, Desmond Ridder had the kind of game that Mark Helfrich wants from his second-year quarterback.
Efficient.
Henderson ran for 114 yards and three scores, but it was Ridder who came up the big the whole day, missing just once in 17 attempts. He then completed a pair of throws on the final drive to move the sticks as the Xtreme held on to beat the Stallions 28-23 Sunday at Dignity Health Sports Park.
While Ridder completed passes to Tyler Higbee on two of Los Angeles' first three plays, it was a running day for the Xtreme. In fact both teams committed to the run on a windy day in Carson, as after Henderson's first touchdown made it 7-0 St. Louis came back and puonded the rock with Jonathan Taylor, as he carried the ball seven times on the ensuing Stallions' drive and they tied it on an eight-yard Jarrett Stidham pass to Romeo Doubs.
After Cameron Dicker missed from 36, followed by a St. Louis three-and-out, the Xtreme took the lead back on a Ridder touchdown pass to Khalil Shakir. A pair of Matthew Wright field goals would get the Stallions back to within 14-13, in time for the Xtreme run game to go to work again. This time, after Henderson began the drive with a six-yard run Dameon Pierce popped one for 20, then Henderson took a screen pass 25 yards. He would then convert a fourth and inches run before his second touchdown pushed the Los Angeles lead to 21-13.
Henderson's third touchdown made it 28-16, and the Stallions ended up with a fourth and 27 on their next series, having to punt the ball away. Los Angeles was able to run some clock when they were about to attempt their first punt of the game, which ended up being the play St. Louis needed.
Former Xtreme Amani Oruwariye broke through and blocked Colby Wadman's punt, and three quick plays later the Stallions got points as Stidham hit Kyle Philips for the score. Tehn Ridder went to work.
Henderson started off with a six-yard run before Ridder hit Shakir for 14, then after a couple of Henderson runs went for no gain Ridder walked it off, hitting Parker Washington for 12 to end it, completing his day that went 16 of 17 for 199 yards and a touchdown.
Stidham was just as solid for his part, going 16 of 18 for 203 yards and two touchdowns. The 32 of 35 between both quarterbacks set a new league record for combined accuracy. Kelvin Benjamin caught five passes for 111 yards in his return to southern California after spending last season in San Diego. Taylor ran 18 times for 86 yards.

Mission 31 Reign 28
SEATTLE, WA--Matt McCrane has only been a member of the San Diego Mission for a few days, and indeed it might only last a few more depending on the health of regular kicker Greg Zuerlein, out with a groin injury. But if this was his one and only, he made it a good one.
Good thing, because the San Diego run defense was more the run over defense.
Taking over with just 43 seconds left on their own 15, Eric Bieniemy took a page from Herman Edwards' book and played to win the game. Malik Willis started the drive by completing a pair of passes, and then Isiah Pacheco came up with the big plays, first a 24-yard run, then with the clock running down a 19-yard screen pass that set up McCrane's game-winner as the Mission go to 2-1 with a 31-28 win over the Reign Sunday at Lumen Field.
Seattle wasted a 309-yard rushing day, 209 and two touchdowns by rookie Chase Brown--making his first start, in part because Brian Hoyer was under siege, he was 15 of 26 for 126 yards and was sacked seven times. Nick Sciba also missed a couple of field goals.
After being given the football equivalent of hard labor against Kansas City a week ago Willis came out on fire, going six of seven for 68 yards on the Mission's first series, ending with a six-yard scoring pass to Josh Gordon. But the Reign had a secret weapon.
With Jamaal Williams out with a hamstring injury the Reign turned to their rookie fourth round pick, to say that he was electric in his first start was barely touching the surface. Travell Harris returned the kickoff across the 40, then Brown got all three carries, the last 37 went for the tying tocuhdown. Then the Reign would take their lone lead of the game on a Hoyer touchdown pass to Emeka Emezie eight seconds into the second quarter.
That was as good as it got the rest of the half, as Willis threw touchdown passes to Pacheco and Marcus Lucas, the latter had a career day with 144 yards on eight catches, to put San Diego back up 21-14. The Reign missed a chance for points, that would come back to haunt them by the end of the game, as Sciba missed from 47.
Seattle got a big defensive stop out of the half when Michael Clemons sacked Willis on fourth and 1 at the Seattle 22, but they were unable to do anything with it, and the Mission would add to their lead early in the fourth quarter as Willis hit Skyy Moore. The Reign answered behind Brown, who had another big series, with a 40-yard run on fourth and inches before a five-yard touchdown run cut to 28-21. Then, after the Mission failed again on fourth and short, Brown did it again, taking a sweep 27 yards on third down from midfield and the Reign converted another fourth down, with Hoyer completing a short pass to Marvin Jones, before Titus Swen took it in to tie the game.
Seattle got inside midfield on their final series, but perhaps approriately Hoyer was sacked, for the seventh and final time, by Mack Wilson, on their final offensive play, paving the way for San Diego to take the game back.
Willis was 28 for 41 for 342 yards with four touchdowns and an interception. Pacheco had 160 yards of offense--rushing 15 times for 78 yards and catching six for 82. San Diego ended up outgaining Seattle despite being outrushed by over 200 yards as the Reign fall to 0-3.

Colonels 38 Rage 33
ORLANDO, FL--For the second time in as many home games another ex-Rage hand was there to send the crowd home unhappy, this time as Orlando falls to 0-3.
Two weeks ago it was Golden Tate in a walkoff win for Columbus, here it was Micah Hyde picking Brad Kaaya off in the endzone on the final play of the game and denying the Rage an amazing comeback, with the Colonels holding on for a 38-33 win Sunday night at Camping World Stadium.
Also for the second time, the Rage started off with a 10-0 lead. Like in week one, it was erased, although much more rapidly this time, as Kyle Trask threw scoring passes to Jayden Reed and Ian Thomas to put Carolina up 14-10 early in the second quarter. The Rage pulled to within a point on a 50-yard Jose Borregales field goal, but that was as close as they would get.
After Dustin Hopkins hit from 24 to push the lead back to four at 17-13, Kaaya was picked off by Jamar Summers, and the Colonels turned it into points as Trask hit Tee Higgins for the score and a 24-13 halftime lead. It stretched to 31-13 on an 11-yard Gus Edwards run.
The Rage temporarily woke up the home crowd as Kaaya aired it out to Jalen Tolbert for a 71-yard score, but the Colonels didn't panic as they went 80 yards in ten plays, the final 26 coming on a third and 1 pass to Hunter Renfrow. But, the Rage would own the fourth quarter, and nearly pulled out a comeback win.
Kaaya hit Tre Nixon for a 30-yard score, and instead of hopping on the 4th and 15 craze Orlando kicked off. It looked like it was going to backfire on Kris Richard as Carolina started out with first down passes to Higgins and Thomas, but after a pair of short runs by Edwards and Kenneth Gainwell the Rage got a big defensive stop when Brock Martin strip-sacked Trask and forced a Carolina punt. Then the Rage got closer as Kaaya hit Jakobi Meyers to bring them to within five.
Needing one last stop instead the Colonels drove into scoring range. But Hopkins missed from 43, and Kaaya hit Tolbert for 31 as things were going Orlando's way. Evan after an Alim McNeill sack it still looked like the Rage had it as Kaaya and Tolbert once again connected for 21. Three plays later though it was Hyde, who spent one season in O-town, to put an end to it.
Trask threw four touchdown passes for the second time in three games with Edwards rushed for 117 yards. Meyers and Tolbert became the first duo to each record 100-yard games this year with Meyers going for 133 on a season-high 13 catches and Tolbert with 138 on four. The Rage fall to 0-3 and got some worse injury news as Nick Saldiveri, their third round pick who started at right tackle in week one and is currently on IR with a shoulder injury, is now expected to miss the rest of the season.
