Stallions 30 Glory 13
ST. LOUIS, MO--Must be the Dome.
After being ground into hamburger the last couple weeks by Javonte Williams and Darrell Henderson, the St. Louis Stallions came home and got a much needed W, while the Washington Glory over that time look every bit the team that was pegged for a rebuild. Jarrett Stidham threw a pair of touchdown passes and Rhamondre Stevenson rushed for two as well as the Stallions pounded out a comfortable 30-13 win Saturday at the Dome.
The Stallions got a big punt return by Romeo Doubs into Washington territory, then struck first on a ten-yard pass from Stidham to Jonathan Taylor, then their defense came alive after two terrible road outings, enabling them to start pulling away late in the second quarter. Stevenson's first of two scores made it 14-0, then the backbreaker came on the next series. Daniel Whelan pinned the Stallions at their 2 with 1:41 left, but Anthony Becht wasn't about to sit on it. On first down Stidham dropped back into his endzone and hit Hakeem Butler up near the 30, then a screen to Stevenson went for 15 and a Taylor run went for 5 before Stidham connected with Cordarrelle Patterson for 31 down to the 20. Two plays later St. Louis was in the end zone as Stidham hit Kelvin Benjamin.
In the third quarter the Stallions went up 24-0 before the Glory finally mounted a serious charge. Kevin Harris looked to have scored but it was overturned on review, and on the next play Dom Peterson sacked Allen and forced a fumble, right into the arms of Drew Lewis, sunnarizing the day for the Glory in a nutshell. Allen was sacked five times, they had the turnover, and were called for nine penalties. This all coming on the heels of a 48-17 blowout loss to San Francisco at home.
The Glory did get on the board with a Harris run late in the third and a Kyle Allen touchdown to Jalen Wydermyer, but it was too little too late as they failed to convert on 4th and 15, and the Stallions closed it out with Stevenson's second touchdown run.
Stidham was an efficient 16 of 21 for 228 while not having much of a running game to help him--Jonathan Taylor rushed for just 63 yards on 19 carries and Stevenson, despite his two scores, ended up with 31 on nine. Benjamin caught five passes for 71 yards.
Allen completed his first ten passes but had nothing to show for it as the Glory had just 146 yards in the first half, including a turnover on downs as Deatrich Wise stopped Kalen Ballage for no gain on fourth and short from the St. Louis 18. Cedric Tillman, who was the talk of the league with five touchdown receptions in Washington's first two games, caught eight passes for 77 yards but was held out of the endzone for the second straight game.
