Rage 25 Sharks 19
TAMPA, FL--In two weeks the Orlando Rage have gone from a lost hope to possibly salvaging the season, and especially in a division where no one has taken charge it could mean even bigger things on the horizon.
Brad Kaaya threw two interceptions but the defense backed him up by holding the Sharks to just 286 yards of offense and shut down Tampa Bay down in the redzone, allowing just a lone touchdown in five trips, before Kaaya threw the game-winning score to Jakoni Meyers with just 1:12 remaining as the Rage came back to stun the Sharks in Tampa 25-19 Saturday at Raymond James Stadium.
Orlando began their comeback after Michael Badgley's fourth field goal of the day made it 19-10. The Rage drove to the Tampa Bay 46 where they faced a fourth and 3. Kaaya avoided pressure before finally getting it off to Lynn Bowden for seven yards, who withstood a hard hit by Andrew Booth, to keep the drive going. After Kaaya scambled for four, Samaje Perine took it for 14 and then 21 for the touchdown to cut it to two with 8:32 left.
Tampa Bay got a couple of first downs but stalled near midfield, then Jake Julien pinned Orlando inside their 10. Despite that the Rage clearly had the answer, going 92 yards and not facing one third down. They picked their way across midfield and then, out of the two-minute warning Kaaya hit Meyers for 12, and Perine on the next play cut it up for 26 before the go-ahead score two plays later which was punctuated by a two-point pass from Kaaya to Jalen Tolbert. The end came when DeMarcco Hellams picked Drew Lock off on the first play of what would be Tampa Bay's final series. It was Lock's first interception of the year, he finished just 9 of 23 for 116 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
Perine carried ten times for 94 yards and a touchdown in his best game since the former number one overall pick returned to the Rage after two years in Dallas--and a week after rushing for just three yards on seven carries in his return to Arlington. Orlando rushed for a season-best 216 yards, with Kendre Miller going for 64 on six carries and Trey Sermon with 46 on nine.
The Sharks regressed to their worst redzone outing since week 1, they had gone 11 of 13 in the last three games coming in. Jordan Howard was held to a season-worst 39 yards on 16 carries, the play that symbolized their problems was early in the second quarter on third and 1 from inside the 5 as Howard was tackled for a four-yard loss by Tae Crowder, and then the Sharks wouldn't even get points out of it as a bad Brian Khoury snap resulted in Julien being tackled for a loss of seven as he fell on it. While Tampa Bay scored on their next possession, a 15-yard strike from Lock to Tyler Scott, it would indeed put the Sharks behind the eight-ball as they only led by nine instead of 12 in the fourth quarter and could have changed Orlando's entire strategy.
The win put the Rage back on track in the all-time series since it became The War on I-4 four years ago, they had swept the first three seasons before last year's sweep by the Sharks.
