Colonels 37 Sharks 0
RALEIGH, NC--Drew Lock might have received some MVP votes. Of course, it's usually not a good thing for the team when said 'MVP' doesn't play, and Saturday night on Tobacco Road was anything but good for the Tampa Bay Sharks.
But it was plenty good for the homestanding Colonels, who rolled to their fourth straight win with an easy 37-0 conquest of the Lock-less Sharks at Carter-Finley Stadium.
Kyle Trask and the Colonels played effectively a safe game as Nathan Peterman turned the ball over five times--three interceptions and two fumbles, the first of which ended what looked to be a promising drive as the Sharks hit midfield, but that ended in short order as Peterman was strip-sacked by Marquis Haynes, who also came up with the recovery to get Carolina started. It took nine plays as Trask scored himself on a seven-yard keeper. Disaster returned for the Sharks on the next series as Peterman took off on a third and 6, only for Ogbonnia Okoronkwo to swat the ball out of his hand into the arms of Jeremiah Ledbetter. This time Carolina wouldn't go anywhere but no matter as this time, while Tampa Bay held onto the ball, they went three-and-out, but it did set up their highlight of the game.
An 81-yard Jake Julien punt, which naturally went into the endzone for a touchback.
This time it took just five plays for the Colonels to bump their lead as Ben Sims' first catch of the year also became his first career touchdown. More horror followed, this time as Peterman was picked off on a tipped pass by Byron Young, and another five-play drive put the Colonels up 21-0, this time on a Kenneth Gainwell eight-yard run.
Tampa Bay's lone scoring opportunity (yes they had one) went by the wayside as Michael Badgley missed from 51, while Dustin Hopkins hit from 51 for a 24-0 lead. Carolina put a wrap on it with touchdown runs by Gainwell and Gus Edwards to push the lead to 37-0 before Ryan Wills replaced Trask in the fourth quarter.
Peterman went all the way in his night of horror, finishing 29 of 39 for 212 yards. Jordan Howard carried 12 times for 57 yards in his return to Carolina, where his string of 1000-yard seasons ended last year. Elijah Moore caught nine passes for 91 yards.
Trask was 13 of 21 for 176 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for one as well. The Colonels have scored 35 points or more during each game of their four-game win streak, averaging just under 40 in those games.

Monarchs 49 Xtreme 28
KANSAS CITY, MO--So much for this year being different.
After posting a miserable 35.5 passer rating in two games against Kansas City a year ago (a popular Youtuber might say he'd have a better rating spiking the ball on every play), Desmond Ridder's life was made miserable by the Monarchs again, as he went 16 of 35 for 156 yards and an interception while Case Keenum threw three touchdowns and Michael Carter and Sean Tucker ran for scores in a 49-28 Monarchs rout at Arrowhead Saturday.
Too bad for the Xtreme, because once again the Monarchs' weak spot, their run defense, was Los Angeles' gain as the Xtreme ran for 295 yards, led by Henderson's 200 on 23 carries. He, Dameon Pierce, and Jason Huntley all rushed for touchdowns as the Xtreme matched the Monarchs blow for blow into the third quarter and trailed just 28-25 after Henderson's seventh score of the year. Then the Xtreme forced a Kansas City three-and-out--the Monarchs' lone punt of the day--and took over with 10:44 left in the third. But a holding penalty on Alec Anderson, starting for the injured Damien Lewis, followed by a pair of short Henderson runs forced the Xtreme into a third-and-long.
Stating the obvious, it wasn't where they wanted to be.
Ridder's pass for Parker Washington was picked off by Tashaun Gipson and run back 31 yards for the score, and you could almost hear a return to order. The Xtreme drove to their own 48 when Henderson, for one of the few times in the game, was stopped as Karter Schult ran him out of bounds for a no gain on third and 1. Then on fourth Ridder tried a pop pass to Huntley but he couldn't corral it and the Monarchs took over. However they would be stopped too as a Carter touchdown was overturned and then Keenum was stopped as he tried to take it in himself.
The Xtreme then went 98 yards but once again a team would bow up in short yardage. Pierce would take it to the 1 on second down, and then on third and goal Henderson dropped a screen for what would been an easy walk-in six. Mark Helfrich, perhaps with what happened on the last two fourth-and-shorts in mind, took the field goal to get within seven. Then the Monarchs went into close-out mode, as they ate up seven and a half minutes and converted a pair of third downs on the way to Tucker's first career rushing touchdown. Ridder was sacked twice by Dre'Mont Jones to effectively end the game. Carter's touchdown put a bow on it with 1:45 left.
Since Beckham returned to the lineup following a two-game absence with a thigh injury the Monarchs are 14 of 23 on third down and 11 of 15 in the redzone. He caught four passes for 88 yards. Sean Tucker rushed four times for 86 yards, including a 57-yard run where he touched the ball on all three plays--and a 14-yard touchdown catch for his first career TD.
The win was Kansas City's 51st (in 56 games) since the Xtreme snapped the Monarchs' 40-game winning streak at Arrowhead three years ago.

Rage 37 Hitmen 36
ORLANDO, FL--The crowd was angry and ready to leave Camping World Stadium in droves after falling behind 21-3, then the home team rallied. Then they were set to abandon them again as another late rally was set to fall short, instead Brad Kaaya had other plans. After not completing the comeback and getting picked off in the endzone his last time out, Kaaya instead hit Jalen Tolbert on fourth and 7 in the final minute for the game-winning 35-yard score as the Orlando Rage came back to stun the New York Hitmen 37-36 for their third straight win.
Kaaya struggled out of the gate, getting picked off by Grant Haley to set up a short Hitmen drive that gave then a 21-3 lead on a Garrett Gilbert touchdown to Cam Phillips. But the tide began to turn when Kazmeir Allen fumbled on a punt return, and two plays later Kaaya threw the first of five touchdown passes, the first coming to Lynn Bowden to cut the lead to 21-10. Then after a Christopher Dunn field goal pushed lead back up to 14, Kaaya got Orlando downfield quickly and hit Bowden once again with 16 seconds ;eft to bring the Rage within 24-17.
Out of the break Orlando completed the comeback and tied the game as Kaaya hit Jakobi Meyers. The Hitmen would build the lead back up, but were held out of the endzone as four Dunn field goals comprised their second-half scoring, they missed their last five third down conversions and Gilbert was just 5 of 15.
The Rage pulled to within two on Kaaya's fourth touchdown pass, a nine-yarder to Mitchell Wilcox. Kris Richard decided to kick deep with five minutes left, counting on his defense to come up big, and they ultimately did as Gilbert's pass for Cole Turner was wide on second and 5 and Kenneth Walker couldn't corral a screen pass on third down, forcing a field goal. Then a disastrous squib attempt by Trenton Gill set the Rage up near midfield right off the bat, but the Hitmen still came one play away from thwarting the comeback--just as Carolina did three weeks ago. It wasn't to be however, as Tolbert broke free and hauled in the long pass from Kaaya for his second touchdown of the year.
Kaaya came to the rescue on a day where Orlando rushed for just 36 yards, topping 400 yards for the second time this year. Bowden, who had three catches for 19 yards before injuries put him into a more prominent role in the offense, had his first 100-yard game with 101 on seven catches. Tolbert had eight for 136.
Gilbert finished 15 of 31 for 187 yards and two scores after his second-half struggles. Walker and Zach Evans combined for 159 yards as both carried 14 times each. The Hitmen have lost three straight after a 2-1 start.

Reign 28 Enforcers 27
CHICAGO, IL--Two plays that don't happen to a Rex Ryan team, well, happened.
One, Chase Brown ripped off a 59-yard touchdown run on second and 20, and two, on fourth and 1 from the Seattle 44 with just over four minutes left, Elijah Holyfield was met by Te'Von Coney for a one-yard loss and that would end up the difference as the Reign rallied from a ten-point deficit to stun the Enforcers at Soldier Field and pick up their first win.
The Enforcers had done a fairly good job bottling up the Seattle run game as they held Brown to a respectable 37 yards on eight carries in the first half, but as Brown has done since effectively becoming the starter he exploded in the second half to finish with 143 yards.
The Reign showed they were game as after a scoreless first, Matt McCrane put the first points on the board with a 26-yard field goal with 11:49 left in the second. It was the first of six straight scoring drives between both clubs. Chicago responded with a 43-yard touchdown pass from Gardner Minshew to Jaquarii Roberson. A big Malik Knowles kickoff return would eventually lead to another McCrane field goal. Minshew hit Josh Downs to make it 14-6, but Brown took a screen pass from Brian Hoyer 21 yards for a score, and it would be the tying score too as he ran in the two-point conversion with 19 seconds left. But of course that wasn't it, Godwin Igwebuike took the ensuing kickoff back near midfield, and a long pass from Minshew to Amon-Ra St. Brown later Jonathan Garibay hit from 49 to end the half, ending the sequence.
Isaiah Bowser's five-yard score, making it 24-14, was the only points of the third quarter, but Garibay kicked out of bounds to set up the Reign for their next score, a 10-play 60-yarder that ended in Hoyer to Emeka Emezie less than a minute into the fourth to make it 24-21. One of Minshew's rare misfires led to a Garibay field goal, but once again he kicked the ball out of bounds and set Seattle up at the 40. Two snaps into the drive it looked like Chicago might be let off the hook when Isaiah Prince was called for holding, putting Seattle in long yardage, but after an incomplete pass Brown would have none of that, as he scampered for his seventh rushing touchdown of the year.
Ryan would rue two fourth and shorts, as Swift was thrown back for a four-yard loss in the first quarter before Holyfield suffered the same. Chicago was without Swift's main backup Kennedy Brooks so the Enforcers relied on Holyfield and Bowser, neither of whom had a carry before week five--and Bowser had been inactive in the four games since week one, to get the rest of the backfield work. Swift finished with 53 yards on nine carries, but was competely shut down by Seattle before a 46-yard run in the third quarter got him somewhat untracked.
Hoyer was 12 of 20 for 132 yards with two touchdowns, but for the first time this season Brown's legs helped the Reign to a win. Jamaal Williams rushed for just 58 yards on 17 carries, he's rushed for just 111 yards on 36 carries (just over three yards per carry) since returning from a hamstring injury. Greg Dulcich caught two passes for 38 yards before leaving with a hamstring injury of his own.
Minshew was 20 of 31 for 312 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Enforcers have lost three of four since a 2-0 start.

Mission 23 Lonestars 22
ARLINGTON, TX--Ninth try's a charm.
After an expansion season devoid of a win against any of their three Madden foes, the San Diego Mission finally have their first win. And more importantly it pulls them to .500 on the season to begin a stretch where it didn't look like too many wins were possible. Now anything is possible.
Greg Zuerlein hit from 22 as the clock ran out to give the Mission a 23-22 victory over the Lonestars and Phillip Lindsay ran for 108 yards in his return to Arlington as San Diego dealt Dallas their third straight loss in their first game after trading Josh Gordon.
It might not have been the difference in the game, considering it came with 4:34 left in the first quarter, but Kyzir White's block of Tristan Vizcaino's second extra point loomed large. But, after the short pass to Albert Okwuegbunam that put Dallas up 13-0, they would not reach the endzone again, with three Vizcaino field goals providing the rest of their scoring, even after a bad pass by Malik Willis that was intercepted by Armani Watts and run back 41 yards. A drive-killing sack by Dominique Robinson would keep the game at five going into halftime.
The 13-0 deficit didn't prove too big at all as the Mission erased it on their next two series. Isiah Pacheco's 20-yard run got San Diego on the board, and after a Dallas three-and-out Willis capped a ten-play 56-yard drive by taking it in himself, his second straight game with a rushing TD, for a 14-13 lead.
In the fourth quarter after the Lonestars went up eight on Vizcaino's third field goal, Willis, needing a big fourth quarter drive after a rough past two games, gave the Mission just what they needed as he got them downfield in 12 plays and into the endzone with a touchdown pass to Darrius Shepherd, but the Lonestars stayed in front as Pacheco was stopped short of the goal line on the two-point try. Dallas would pick up one first down before giving the ball back, and Willis, with the big drive already in his pocket, doubled down--with some help.
On fourth and 5 from the 13 the Mission punted but Cameron Young was called for roughing, keeping the drive alive. But after the Mission picked up another first down, Willis would need no favors. On fourth and 10 from his own 44 he hit Shepherd for 14, fired a bullet to Skyy Moore for 13, and then Lindsay carried for eight to go over the 100-yard mark. It was clock-kill mode from there as the Lonestars burned all their timeouts, then after the last one Willis took a knee with half a minute left before San Diego called timeout and Zuerlein drove home the chipshot.
Perez threw a pair of first quarter touchdown passes and finished with decent numbers (17-30-196) but was largely ineffective from that point on as the Lonestars dropped their third straight since a 3-0 start (two at home). Jacques Patrick led the way on the ground with 13 carries for 83 yards and Javonte Williams added 63 on 11.
Lindsay, who rushed for ten touchdowns in his lone season in Arlington, had his first 100-yard game since going for 109 against Chicago (with Dallas) last year. Pacheco added 70 and a touchdown on 13 carries. Shepherd, whose role in the offense is bound to increase with Gordon gone, caught four passes for 53 yards and a touchdown to lead the team.

Stallions 56 Bolts 17
ST. LOUIS, MO--If the St. Louis Stallions are doing nothing else in 2024, they're making the Dome a place where no opposing team wants to come play--a theory that will be tested when Kansas City and San Francisco visit later in the season, but for now Anthony Becht's team is 3-0 inside the friendly confines.
Jarrett Stidham missed all of one pass, and the three-headed monster of Jonathan Taylor, Zonovan Knight, and Eric Gray all rushed for touchdowns as the Stallions ran away from the Bolts in a laugher 56-17 on Sunday.
Stidham's only incomplete pass on the day came on his fourth attempt, as he tried to hit newly-acquired Tyler Johnson for a touchdown, which he would do on the next play anyway as he connected with Kelvin Benjamin for the score four minutes in. You may as well have called the game right there as the Bolts drove downfield, only for Taylor Heinicke to be picked off by Amani Oruwariye. Knight scored to cap a 12-play drive, making it 13-0 as Nick Cross swooped in for arguably the Bolts' highlight, blocking the extra point attempt by Matthew Wright.
It got worse as the Bolts had back-to-back three-and-outs while the Stallions added to the lead on a Taylor touchdown and Stidham touchdown pass to Cordarrelle Patterson to push it to 27-0, then Birmingham finally broke through, albeit with just three on a Brandon Aubrey field goal. True to form St. Louis responded as Stidham hit Patterson again, this time from 44 to push the lead to 34-3 at halftime.
Stidham's fourth scoring pass of the day, a 14-yarder to Zack Kuntz, made it 40-3 as the two-point try was no good--Wright was injured on the second half kickoff and the Stallions didn't attempt a scrimmage kick, other than a Joseph Charlton punt, the rest of the way.
Heinicke threw a touchdown pass to A.T. Perry and then converted a fourth-and-15 pass to Deon Cain for 28, but the drive ended when he threw four straight incomplete passes. Gray's one-yard touchdown run followed by his own two-point conversion run made it 48-10, and after a Heinicke touchdown to George Pickens was followed by unsuccessful fourth-and-15 Josh Johnson, replacing Stidham, got in on the action as he threw a 23-yard score to Hakeem Butler to finish the scoring.
For the second time this season Heinicke was lifted for A.J. McCarron, after going 12 of 25 for 182 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. But McCarron, even facing a 39-point deficit, didn't come and light up the scoreboard in garbage time, completing just 4 of 10 passes for 37 yards. The Bolts' quarterbacks were sacked four times by St. Louis.
The Stallions piled up a season-high 590 yards while holding the Bolts under 300. Stidham is now completing over 80% of his passes and is still yet to throw an interception, the only starter in the league to do so. Patterson caught five passes for 124 yards, his first 100-yard game nearly two years to the day (3/26/22 vs. LA).

Demons 64 Stampede 48
SAN ANTONIO, TX--Is there a new Monarch-like juggernaut ripping through the league?
The San Francisco Demons trailed after the first quarter for the first time this season, lost their kicker on the opening kickoff and nearly their punter on an extra point, and put 57 points over the final three quarters in a calculator-needy 64-48 win over the San Antonio Stampede at the Alamodome as Kyle Lauletta threw six touchdown passes.
On a day that looked to belong to "new" (his second tour of duty) Stampede wideout Josh Gordon, who got things started with a 17-yard catch on the first play of the game en route to a nine-catch 111-yard return with a touchdown, the Demons took over the final three quarters. Lauletta hit Trevon Grimes for a 17-yard touchdown, and Hunter Luepke ran in the two to give San Francisco a 15-14 lead. A David Montgomery touchdown put San Antonio back on top, only for the Demons to respond in rapid fire, taking just three plays and regaining the lead as Lauletta hit Grimes again for 29. The Stampede took their last lead on another Montgomery touchdown, but the Demons came back in an instant once again, as Lauletta hit Cade Otton for the score from 18 yards out and a 28-27 halftime lead.
Then the Demons got separation as Christian Watson took the second half kickoff back 100 yards, and the Stampede would chase them the rest of the way, not pulling any closer than eight on a Colin Kaepernick touchdown pass to Gordon with 3:09 left in the third. Watson then would score on a 49-yard catch-and-run to put San Francisco up two touchdowns, and the lead stayed in double digits the rest of the way. Watson, Grimes, and Otton all had two touchdowns receiving each as Lauletta finished with 429 yards on 27 of 39 passing.
Kaepernick threw for 359 yards and four touchdowns himself but was picked off twice, one a leaping pick by Davin Bellamy as he tried to get the Stampede out of their own end that instead set up the Demons' first score on a short pass from Lauletta to Watson. Gordon and Reggie Roberson both went over 100 yards receiving--the first Stampede duo to do that since Randall Cobb and DeSean Jackson did it in 2011.
The game ended up as the highest-scoring in league history, beating the previous, a 62-48 Washington win over Dallas at RFK Stadium in 2004.

Glory 59 Capitols 35
WASHINGTON, DC--So two things were at play here: One, people wanted to see if the first-place Capitols (yes, that's a thing) were for real, this being their first time out on the road since a week two heartbreaker in San Antonio; and two, Reggie Barlow sounded like he was on the verge of tearing up the team if they didn't snap their three-game slide. We'll leave it you to guess which one won out.
OK time's up, the Glory scored on six of their first seven possessions and put up a team-record 42 points in the first half, Kevin Harris ran for 139 yards, and Kyle Allen threw six touchdown passes. All added up Washington ended their losing streak and then some, easily dispatching the Capitols 59-35 Sunday night at Audi Field and putting up 606 yards of total offense.
It was fitting that the Glory, who saw Cedric Tillman set a rookie record in week one with three receiving touchdowns, would get big games and contributions from two more rookie pass catchers with Tillman out. Harris went for 44 on the first play of the game, and four plays later Allen found Jason Brownlee for a score from 12 yards out, the beginning of his big night. After a Columbus three-and-out the Glory went back to work, this time getting downfield in six plays, the final 48 coming on a bomb to Ty Scott. Then Washington was back at it again after a DeMarquis Gates interception, and in three plays they hit the pay window again on Allen's third touchdown pass, a 16-yard wheel route to Kalen Ballage.
So in 14 plays and just over nine minutes in the Glory had a 21-0 lead, not bad. Then Columbus got going.
Brian Flores' charges can look to the fact that they at worst played even with, if not outplayed, the Glory for 51 minutes. But..........you know. A 53-yard Breece Hall run was followed by Columbus' first score of the game, a 12-yard Will Levis pass to Osirus Mitchell. Unfortunately for the Capitols Tanner Brown kicked the ball out of bounds, and in three plays the Glory were on the board again as Allen's fourth touchdown pass of the first quarter (second to Brownlee) put Washington back up by three touchdowns. Undeterred, the Capitols got back to within 28-14 on Levis' second scoring pass, a 14-yarder to Golden Tate.
Two more Allen touchdowns, his fifth touchdown pass and a third-and-goal sneak, the latter capping a 96-yard drive, were answered by an Israel Abanikanda touchdown run with 18 seconds left, and then another one in the third to get Columbus back to within two touchdowns, but that was as close as they would get. Harris' 29-yard scoring run, his third straight game with a touchdown and fourth of the year, was met with Hall's sixth rushing score of the year before the Glory scored the last ten points.
Brownlee, as you would have guessed, set another record, as he and Tillman become the first rookie duo to catch three touchdown passes in a game as Brownlee caught ten passes for 160 yards. The Glory pull into a tie for second in the Liberty, one game behind the division-leading Capitols.
