Colonels 45 Rage 10
RALEIGH, NC--Well that bye week the Rage had was clearly an advantage, while the Colonels fended off questions as to how legitimate they were with a thrashing of their Independence rivals at Carter-Finley Stadium, almost guaranteeing them the division as they would have to severely flop over their last six games to lose it.
Kevin O'Connell knows that can happen, but he also knows his team and their capabilities, which is why he triggered the wrath of the fans by kicking a short field goal on fourth and 1 past the midway point of the first quarter, because he knew they would be back.
While that strategy nearly resulted in Orlando grabbing the lead late in the first quarter--they got into the redzone before the Carolina defense stiffened, forcing a Jose Borregales field goal, the Colonels would score on all but two of their first half drives, and one almost ended up in a touchdown for Sage Surratt on an end-of-half bomb, running up a 24-3 lead at the half. Playing without Tee Higgins for the second straight game with a hamstring injury, the Colonels may have gotten another glimpse of their offense next year, should they elect to let him walk, as Jayden Reed racked up 195 yards on nine catches and took three to the house--all in the decisive second quarter.
The Rage had no answer for the Carolina steamroller on either offense or defense as Kyle Trask torched the Orlando defense for 414 yards, and the Colonels sacked Brad Kaaya five times--three by Jeremiah Ledbetter--in a win that recalled Orlando's 35-point mugging of the X-Bowl bound Colonels in Orlando last year. Jerome Ford and Kenneth Gainwell added touchdown runs as Carolina led 45-3 at one point before Kaaya hit James Mitchell to make the score a little more, though not much, respectable.
Both teams' backups finished the game, with Ryan Willis completing four of five for 20 yards while Todd Centeio misfired on both his throws and lost six yards on a botched snap to end the game. It was a different story than their week three matchup in Orlando, where both teams went into play 0-2, whereas here the Colonels have now won seven of eight while the Rage, after pulling even at 3-3, have now lost three of four.

Stampede 39 Enforcers 31
SAN ANTONIO, TX--Make no mistake, after consecutive games that saw the Stampede score 24 points in losses to Washington and Dallas, a return to the Alamodome and a win over the Enforcers, co-leaders of the Liberty coming in, is just what Joe Lombardi wanted to see. He just wishes it had been cleaner, that's all.
San Antonio roared to a 20-0 lead with 5:43 left in the first half before the Enforcers got on the board with a 67-yard D'Andre Swift touchdown run, and a Gardner Minshew touchdown pass to Josh Downs in the final minute whiddled the deficit to 20-14. Then after the Stampede took a 36-24 fourth quarter, they had numerous chances to put Chicago away but couldn't, and saw the Enforcers close to within five with the ball when Gardner Minshew did something he doesn't do, throw interceptions on consecutive series. Then David Montgomery allowed himself to be run out of bounds on San Antonio's final series, forcing the Stampede to kick a field goal instead of run the clock out (and thus the possibility of a block and a return), but Jason Sanders drilled a 42-yarder as the Stampede held off the Enforcers and moved to 4-1 at home, picking up a huge win in the playoff race in the process.
The Stampede put up 444 yards of offense, nearly matching their total of the previous two games combined, and the return of Mecole Hardman was a huge factor. Hardman picked up right where he left off when he sprained his thumb in San Antonio's week one loss in St. Louis, he caught Colin Kaepernick's first pass on the way to an eight-catch, 123-yard, two-score night. Hardman and Josh Gordon, on the field together as teammates for the first time in almost two years, had both touchdowns as part of San Antonio's initial onslaught. Kaepernick would throw two touchdowns in the second half, to Hardman and Jalin Hyatt, as the Enforcers clawed their way back.
The tense moments resurfaced, after the Stampede turned away the Enforcers' initial charge, in the final period after San Antonio went up 12. A Chicago drive ended deep in their own territory and Johnny Hekker's punt was short, traveling just across midfield. But Marquez Stevenson bobbled it, and Ronnie Hickman knocked it loose whith a perfectly timed hit allowing Corey Levin to make the recovery. On the next play Minshew hit Amon-Ra St. Brown over the middle, and it turned into a 44-yard gain before Kennedy Brooks scored a pair of runs later. Then another mishap occurred as the Stampede were driving when Kaepernick mishandled the snap, and Anthony Brown recovered to set Chicago up at their own 37 with 5:33 left. Nothing came of it however as Minshew threw his first fourth quarter interception of the year, as Desmond King grabbed his third pick. But a San Antonio three-and-out gave the Enforcers another shot.
It didn't look great for San Antonio, as the Enforcers converted a fourth down on a Kennedy Brooks run, then a 19-yard pass to Allen Lazard on third and 13--his first catch of the season after just being activated this week. Three plays later Minshew went right back to Lazard to convert another third down and a crowd of almost 30,000 felt the peril as Chicago called timeout with 49 seconds left. Minshew then went for the home run, but King got in there and this time tipped it right to Ja'Sir Taylor, who took it back 48 yards and the Stampede seemed like they could relax, which would prove not to be the case but Sanders took care of that. The Enforcers only really had one more good play left, and finished well short when Jaquarii Roberson was tackled inbounds as the clock ran out.
Kaepernick's four touchdown passes were the most he'd ever thrown in a game since he was a San Francisco 49er in 2012. Montgomery ran 26 times for 119 yards, his fourth 100-yard game of the season. The Enforcers have dropped three of their last four away from Soldier Field as their loss gives Columbus back the top spot in the Liberty pending their game Sunday against St. Louis. Swift became the second back in the league to hit the 1000-yard mark, as he did it on his 67-yard touchdown run.

Stallions 28 Capitols 25
COLUMBUS, OH--The end of each half was not kind to the homestanding Capitols, particularly Jacob Copeland, and it not only resulted in their first home loss of the season, but it was a huge missed opportunity to wrest control of the Liberty back after Chicago's loss Saturday night.
On second and goal at the 5 with 32 seconds left in the first half, Jacob Copeland ran an end around but was drilled by Troy Pride and fumbled, which Poona Ford scooped up to deny Columbus points at the end of the half. Then out of timeouts Will Levis threw a long pass to him, but Amari Oruwariye got Copeland before he could get out of bounds and give Columbus a chance to send the game to overtime, enabling the St. Louis Stallions to escape the Horseshoe with their first road win of the season and stay right in the thick of the playoff chase.
Israel Abanikanda got things started with an 83-yard kickoff return to the house, his second of the year. But the Stallions had a plan to attack the Capitols on the ground, and it was on display from the go as Jonathan Taylor carried seven times on the opening series en route to a league-most 31. Jarrett Stidham threw a five-yard scoring pass to Kyle Philips to put the Stallions on the board.
After Tanner Brown hit from 22 to give Columbus the lead St. Louis mixed it up on the next series. On third and 15 from his 49 Stidham hit Philips for 29 down to the Columbus 22 to end the first quarter, and opened the second with a 22-yard scoring pass to Cordarrelle Patterson. That held up as Columbus went three-and-out and then the fumble, at the end of a 16-play 92-yard drive, on their last two possessions of the half.
Eric Gray got in on the action with a 36-yard scoring to put St. Louis up 21-10, which was quickly answered by Levis taking it in himself from 11 yards out plus a two-point run by Breece Hall to make it 21-18. St. Louis went back to the run, and even after Taylor was thrown back for a four-yard loss they stayed with it and were rewarded as Gray rumbled for 27 to midfield. From there Taylor and Gray alternated down to the 5, where Stidham hit Philips for another five-yard score, stretching the lead to 28-18.
Columbus then went cold on their next two series, and the Stallions looked like they were literally going to run out the clock until Taylor fumbled, and Quindell Johnson took it back 62 yards for the score to give the Capitols life with 6:38 left. Brian Flores kicked, trusting his defense, but coming their second straight outing of 600 yards plus allowed into a day where they would get rolled for 252 yards rushing, with both Taylor and Gray hitting 100 yards, it was probably a decision he'd have back. St. Louis converted a third down as Stidham hit Hakeem Butler for 11, his lone catch of the day, then Taylor plowed forward just enough to convert a fourth down just inside of two minutes. Columbus got the ball back at their 13 with just 52 seconds left and no timeouts, finishing just nine yards short.
The Capitols drop back into a tie with Chicago atop the Liberty, but the Enforcers have the divisional tiebreaker. The Stallions picked up their first road win since a 33-9 blowout over the Hitmen at the Meadowlands last May.

Monarchs 41 Bolts 6
KANSAS CITY, MO--It was jokingly called the irrestible force against the movable object, it lived up to its name.
Case Keenum threw for 292 yards and three scores, and Michael Carter and Kareem Hunt each rushed for touchdowns, as the Monarchs toyed with the Bolts for most of the first quarter before throttling them to the tune of 41-6 Sunday at Arrowhead.
Birmingham would actually take the first lead of the game on a 51-yard Brandon Aubrey field goal. Their highlight package out of the way, it was, not unexpectedly, all Kansas City from that point on, with the Monarchs facing one slight bit of adversity, or the closest they would have to it the rest of the game, when they had fourth and 2 on the Birmingham 30. But Hunt took off for 15, then Keenum hit Demarcus Robinson for a 15-yard score and it was game over/thanks for playing for the Bolts right there. They drove into Kansas City territory, but Andre Carter sacked A.J. McCarron to end the drive. The Monarchs matched one eight-play drive with another as Keenum hit Jake Ferguson for a 26-yard touchdown to make it 14-3. Michael Carter took it in from 11 late in the half to make it 21-3 before a late field goal by Aubrey trimmed the deficit to 15.
Ken Dorsey would have been just fine calling the game right there. But alas...........
The Monarchs gave the Bolts somewhat of a opening by losing two fumbles. One by Austin Mack at the end of the first half, and the second by Odell Beckham. But Birmingham couldn't capitalize as, with Dorsey eschewing a field goal on fourth and 3 from the 23, McCarron was sacked by Karter Schult. Now back to our regularly scheduled programming, Kansas City went 70 yards in nine plays and added to the lead on Hunt's third touchdown in as many games since making his regular season debut.
Keenum's day was done after his third touchdown pass, a 20-yard strike to Beckham. Vernon Adams went the rest of the way.
Keaton Mitchell had 106 yards on 20 carries, his third straight 100-yard game, in probably the only bit of good news for the Bolts. The passing game was limited as Birmingham played without George Pickens, out with a hand injury, and it slowly materialized as McCarron threw for just 100 yards on 15 of 22 passing while being sacked six times as Kansas City added to their league-leading sack total of 35. Two of which came from Andre Carter, who recorded his third straight game with two sacks. Kansas City outgained Birmingham 468-194.

Hitmen 31 Glory 13
EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ--Ron Rivera is past just beating his former employer, turning his attention instead to a huge victory that gets the Hitmen all the sudden within a game of a playoff spot. That doesn't mean he doesn't enjoy it.
Kenneth Walker and Zach Evans each rushed for touchdowns, and Kazmeir Allen took back the second half kickoff for a touchdown as the Hitmen rolled to an easy 31-13 laugher over the Glory, who have now lost six of eight, at MetLife Stadium.
Reggie Barlow said he was going to play both Kyle Allen and Bailey Zappe and see what happens. Apparently he saw enough of Allen, as he lasted the opening series of each half with Zappe taking the majority of the snaps, throwing for 246 yards and two touchdowns. But while Zappe was the clear winner of the two the defense, which has been the great conundrun with Washington this year, was once again not up to par despite the return of Christian Barmore, out the last three games with knee problems. New York went 93 yards in 12 plays on their opening drive, and Evans' 11-yard run gave the Hitmen a 7-0 lead.
The Hitmen took over at their 40 after a Cam'Ron Harris fumble, and a four-yard Walker run capped a ten-play drive for a 14-0 lead. Washington answered as Zappe threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Tyree Jackson, but the defense once again couldn't get a stop as the Hitmen punched it in again, with Garrett Gilbert hitting Jerrion Ealy for the score. After a Glory three-and-out the Hitmen capped a four-for-four (scoring) first half as Christopher Dunn hit from 43.
Allen's second touchdown return of the year would be the only New York points of the second half, but it didn't matter as the Glory couldn't get out of their own way. Allen, starting the second half, got Washington all the way down to the edge of the redzone but was strip-sacked by Jake Hummel, one of four Glory fumbles (two lost) on the day.
Washington finally got back in the endzone as Zappe hit Cedric Tillman with 43 seconds left. Tillman, who flew out of the gates with five touchdowns in his first two games, an XFL rookie record, had his first since. The Glory have dropped four straight road games, all by 17 or more.

Reign 45 Mission 30
SAN DIEGO, CA--Even playing without all-rookie Chase Brown, who left in the second quarter with a hamstring injury, the Seattle Reign were of the midst of their best offensive showing of the year. Brian Hoyer threw for 220 yards and two scores, and Jamaal Williams ran for three touchdowns.
And it still almost wasn't enough.
In a week of questionable coaching decisions, Eric Bieniemy had one he'd probably like to have back, kicking instead of going for another 4th and 15--after the Mission had successfully converted the first one. Instead Malik Knowles returned the short kickoff to midfield, Hoyer hit Quintin Morris for 24 to put Seattle in field goal range, and Tony Brooks-James iced it with a nine-yard touchdown run as the Reign ran out to a 35-7 lead en route to a 45-30 win over the Mission Sunday at SnapDragon Stadium.
The frantic San Diego comeback began after Matt McCrane, who kicked the game-winner in Seattle for the Mission in week three, hit from 35 to put Seattle up 38-14. San Diego lost Malik Willis to a knee injury after he ran for a first down, and Trace McSorley, elevated to backup with Jaren Hall out with a concussion, entered. After Phillip Lindsay picked up 12, McSorley kept it himself for the touchdown, and then kept it again for the two-point conversion. The ensuing fourth-and-15 became fourth-and-20 as Matt Landers, who earlier caught a touchdown pass from Willis on his first career reception, was called for motion. No matter, as McSorley threw a bomb to Johnny Johnson for 36, continuing the drive. A ten-yard screen pass to Isiah Pacheco, followed by another successful two-pointer as Pacheco ran it in, cut the lead down to eight with 5:17 left.
And then came the decision to kick, and the Reign would make Bieniemy pay.
Two plays after Dominique Robinson was called for offsides, Hoyer's last pass of the day, he was a season-best 16 of 18, went to Morris down the seam. Then Williams ran the ball three times before Brooks-James finished it off. McSorley drove the Mission inside the 40 before he was picked off by Robert Rochell, making his Seattle debut after being claimed off waivers from San Antonio earlier this week, effectively ending the game.
Brown, who went over 1000 yards in a 28-23 loss to New York the week prior, had 21 yards on five carries before leaving. Williams put 70 yards on 17 carries and his three touchdowns give him five over his last three games, with at least one score in all three. Emeka Emezie caught five passes for 82 yards and a touchdown.
Willis will be evaluated later in the week, but early indications are his season is done. He would finish his season with 2191 yards passing, 12 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions if so, also rushing 52 times for 620 yards and five touchdowns. McSorley is the probable starter going forward with Hall still in concussion protocol.

Demons 45 Lonestars 38
PALO ALTO, CA--Hunter Luepke got two carries in what became a western-style shootout, they were his 12th and 13th rushing touchdowns of the year, continuing the eighth-round pick from North Dakota State's magical run. They bookended the scoring, the latter coming with 44 seconds left, as the Demons were for one of the few times on the year put on the defensive as they blew a 38-17 lead but regained their composure enough to pick up their ninth straight win.
In truth it probably should have never been that close as San Francisco uncharacteristically turned the ball over three times, two in the redzone in the fourth quarter as they had a chance to put the game away. Two picks by Kyle Lauletta, his second straight two-interception game, might otherwise have masked a 484-yard three touchdown performance, which also included a career-best 24-yard touchdown run as the Demons built up their lead.
But the Lonestars, in their second outing uder interim coach Chris Woods, and in Shane Buechele's first career start, merely went to work and chipped away at the deficit. Buechele was efficient on a nine-play 77-yard drive, with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Jequez Ezzard to cut the deficit to 14 with two seconds left in the third. Going aggressive, and not seeing a lot to suggest his defense could slow down San Francisco's high-powered attack, Woods went for the fourth and 15 but Buechele was forced out of dodge and tackled well short of the first down. But the defense did come up with the big play as Lauletta tried to thread the needle and Michael Jackson tipped it to Armani Watts for the interception, setting up a 96-yard drive that kept mostly on the ground, with Artavis Pierce finishing it off from nine yards out.
Undaunted by their last failure, Dallas went for the fourth down conversion again, effectively the same result this time as Buechele was pulled down by Jayson Ademilola for the sack. But the defense would get it back again as Lauletta went for the home run ball and was picked by Damontae Kazee, who ran it back 29 yards to the 35. The fire looked to have been put out when Tony Fields sacked Buechele on third and 9, but Leki Fotu was called for a 15-yard personal foul to extend the drive, and Dallas would take advantage. First Pierce tooka pitch and scampered 27 yards on fourth and 1, and three plays Javonte Williams powered in for his second touchdown of the day to tie it.
But there was still 2:33 left.
Christian Watson took the ensuing kickoff 32 yards to the 44, and Lauletta came up with a huge third down conversion, hitting Brice Butler for 12 to move the sticks. Then on the next play he hit Elijah Higgins for 25, and in truth the Demons could have run it down right there if they wanted to as the Lonestars only had one timeout left. The play in which Luepke scored was designed to be a kneeldown, with Doug Pederson mindful of not only Dallas' timeout situation but the Demons' consecutive redzone turnovers. It didn't matter in the end, as Buechele was tackled by Charles Omenihu for a loss after a busted play, then was sacked two plays later by Austin Bryant to wrap it up.
Both teams went over 500 yards in the game, with Dallas gashing San Francisco for 261 yards in the Demons' first game without Justin Houston, slated to miss the rest of the regular season with a hamstring injury. Jacques Patrick had 121 yards on 12 carries. Buechele was 23 of 28 for 279 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Lauletta spread the ball around to 12 different receivers in his third 400-yard game of the season, with Watson catching four for 122 and a score. The Demons' four-game lead on St. Louis and San Antonio in the Walsh is the largest lead in the league.

Sharks 50 Xtreme 28
TAMPA, FL--The XFL's team that wouldn't die is definitely not dead, and they come out of the bye the same way they went in, with a dominant 50-28 win.
Drew Lock threw three touchdown passes, De'Veon Smith ran for two scores, and Mark Robinson sacked Desmond Ridder for a safety as the Sharks broke open a 17-17 tie late in the first half and blew past the Xtreme for their third straight win to pull to within a game of a playoff spot.
After a Darrell Henderson touchdown run tied it, Tampa Bay went 70 yards in eight plays with Lock hitting Jauan Jennings in stride for the go-ahead score, then as the Xtreme were trapped in their own end Robinson, after sacking Desmond Ridder on the previous play, tracked him down before he could get out of the endzone. Smith's first of two scores continued the onslaught in the second half; Lock's third touchdown pass, a five-yarder to Elijah Moore, made it 43-20; and after Bryant McFadden picked off a long Ridder pass and brought it all the way back to the 3, Smith's second touchdown rush ballooned the lead to 50-20.
Brett Rypien replaced Desmond Ridder for the last series and threw a garbage-time touchdown pass to David Wells. Ridder was just 13 of 24 for 150 yards with a touchdown and an interception, wasting a career night from Roschon Johnson, who carried 14 times for 83 yards.
