Sharks 34 Colonels 32
TAMPA, FL--The Tampa Bay Sharks, like last year, won't be headed to the playoffs, but also like last year they're going to take someone down along the way. And once again in week 16 it was the Independence division champion Carolina Colonels.
Drew Lock threw two interceptions in a game for the first time this season but also threw a pair of touchdown passes to Elijah Moore, including an electrifying 75-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter, and the defense bowed up in the final two minutes to deny Carolina a comeback win as the Sharks beat the Colonels 34-32, meaning Carolina now not only doesn't control their destiny but will need Columbus to lose out and possibly Chicago to lose a game (in addition to their own victory in week 17) to clinch home field in the Eastern Conference championship game.
The Colonels struck first on a long touchdown pass from Kyle Trask to Trey Palmer, but wouldn't reach the endzone again until early in the fourth, when they trailed 27-19. Trask threw his second touchdown pass of the day, a 34-yarder to Ben Sims, pulling Carolina to within 27-25. But tying two-point attempt was unsuccessful as Gus Edwards was knocked out of bounds just before stretching the ball across the plane. Lock hit Moore again from nine yards out to make it a nine-point game, and after Jerome Ford lost two on fourth and 1 from the Tampa Bay 16 the Sharks had an opportunity to close it out. They went three-and-out however and Carolina quickly got down the field, his third touchdown of the day, a 15-yarder to Hunter Renfrow, drew Carolina to within two.
Then the Colonels looked like they were going to steal it after being outplayed for most of the second half as Trask hit Sage Surratt for 28 as the clock hit two-minute warning. The Sharks got the big defensive play they were looking for as after Gus Edwards picked up three, Da'Shawn Hand sacked Trask to put the Colonels in third and long. Clark Phillips, who had his seventh pick of the season, two behind league leader Jamar Summers, made a great play to deny a pass intended for Tee Higgins, and on fourth and 13 Trask went deep to Palmer, who had it for a brief moment (and would have put Carolina easily in range for a relative chipshot to win the game) but lost it when he hit the ground. De'Veon Smith ran for 16 on the next play to start draining the Colonels of their timeouts and preserve the win, avenging an ugly 37-0 loss in Raleigh in week six which Nathan Peterman played for an injured Lock.
The Colonels scored just one touchdown in nine trips to the redzone in suffering their first consecutive losses since they began the season 0-2, also taking their first loss within the division. The Sharks, winners of six of their last eight since starting 2-5, finish 4-1 at home in that stretch.
