CHICAGO--They went overtime, and came just 20 seconds away from a tie, but Ricky Ray found Kelley Washington, and he did the rest for the the game-winning touchdown to cap a career-best 214 receiving yards on six catches and the Chicago Enforcers
rallied from a fourth-quarter defecit at home for the second time in three games and did it despite it a non-existent rushing game to beat the Los Angeles Xtreme
27-21 in overtime at Soldier Field Sunday for their fourth straight win over the Xtreme.
Both Xtreme touchdowns were set up by interceptions, the first early in the second quarter by DeShaun Hill starting a seven-play 49-yard drive that also featured a 23-yard sneak by Woodrow Dantzler. Dantzler's 1-yard keeper gave the Xtreme a 13-0 lead with 10:58 left. Ray and Washington hooked up for a 33-yard touchdown
to bring the Enforcers to within 13-7 with 4:49 left.
The second interception came with 8:25 left in the third quarter when Regan Upshaw grabbed a screen pass intended for John Avery and rumbled down to the 8, and the Xtreme cashed in three plays later when Dantzler hit Sean Dawkins for a touchdown. Kareem Kelly added a two-point conversion on an end-around to give the Xtreme a 21-7 lead. The Enforcers looked like they were about to answer the Xtreme again when Lonnie Ford knocked the ball away from Ray at the Xtreme 21 with 3:34 left and fell on it to stop the drive.
The Enforcers would come up with a big defensive stop as Jovon Bush broke through the line to stop Dwone Hicks for a loss on fourth-and-inches at the Enforcer 41
early in the fourth quarter. The Enforcers went 11 plays and 59 yards as Avery, who had just 14 yards rushing, ran for the touchdown on third-and-goal from the 4 to close to within 21-14 with 8:21 left. Then the Enforcers coverted twice on fourth down on the tying drive, once when Ennis Davis jumped offside on fourth-and-5 at the 10. The second coming on fourth-and-goal at the 7 when Ray hit Luke Leverson for the tying touchdown with 2:36 left.
The Xtreme had two chances in overtime, but failed on fourth down inside the Enforcer 40 both times--Dantzler missed Kelly early in the overtime, and then missed Fred Coleman with 5:39 left. The game looked to be headed for a tie as the Enforcers got the ball back at their 43 with just 32 seconds left. But Ray hit Bryan Fletcher
on a screen that went for 12 yards, then Washington, smartly clinging to the sidelines with the Enforcers out of timeouts, grabbed Ray's pass at the 30 and was able to outrace the Xtreme secondary for the game-winner.
Ray has now thrown six interceptions in three games after 11 all of last year, but still has a good passer rating of 93 nonetheless. 'I'm more concerned about how we're playing. Last year, we were blowing teams out here, we've already had to come back twice in the fourth quarter this year. We can't do that every game if we want to win another title'. In both of their home games--and wins, the Enforcers have been outscored 37-7 heading into the fourth quarter. The Xtreme are now zero for three all-time on the road against the Enforcers, including a 27-14 loss in 2002 in Champaign.
