DALLAS, TX--Joey Thomas returned an interception 83 yards for a touchdown and the defense forced Kurt Warner into three second-half interceptions as the Las Vegas Outlaws won their fourth straight game defeating the Dallas Vipers 31-27 at Texas Stadium Sunday.
The Vipers led for most of the second half after Warner's eight-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Thomas gave them a 20-16 lead with 7:32 left in the third quarter. Jason Gesser, who was coming into the game with a 97.8 passer rating during the Outlaws' three-game winning streak, was intercepted by Lawrence Flugence. Then Warner hit back-to-back passes to Chris Cooley and Damon Thompson to put the Vipers down at the Las Vegas 3. The Vipers scored to take the lead after a false start penalty on Jordan Black.
Kris Stockton hit from 28 early in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 20-19, but Warner needed just five plays to stretch the lead, leading a five-play, 51-yard drive that ended with a five-yard touchdown pass to Rashaun Woods to give the Vipers a 27-19 lead with 11:53 left.
The Outlaws needed just three plays after Troy Mason returned a kickoff 40 yards to the Dallas 49 with 11:39 left. Gesser completed a 16-yard pass to Na Brown, then hit a 30-yard bomb to Nate Burleson. Chrys Chukwuma's 5-yard run two plays later pulled the Outlaws to within two--Corey Moore deflected a pass away from Matt Murphy on the two-point attempt.
Antwoine Sanders intercepted Warner on the second play of the next drive to set up Stockton's go-ahead field goal, then Sam Brandon picked Warner off, and a 28-yard pass from Gesser to Clarence Moore highlighted the next drive that ended in another 28-yard field goal from Stockton with less than two minutes left. On the ensuing drive this time, Warner missed twice, then was sacked by Tommy Kelly before a final pass for Shannon Culver fell incomplete.
The Outlaws got on the board on an 18-yarder by Stockton in the first quarter, but the Vipers tied it up on a 22-yarder by Josh Brown, and taking the lead early in the second quarter on Brown's 29-yarder. After Stockton tied it after hitting from 51, Warner went deep but slightly underthrew Woods and Thomas, the XFL interception leader with six, dodged several tacklers as he crossed over to the opposite sideline and raced down the sidelines for the touchdown. Another Stockton field goal and a two-yard touchdown run by Anthony Thomas made the halftime score 16-13.
Stockton hit six field goals, tying a career-high. Gesser threw for 358 yards, his second straight game over 300 yards, making it back-to-back 300-yard games for the first time in his career. His lone 300-yard game prior to this year was a 361-yard game in a 49-17 romp over the Vipers on July 4, 2004 in Las Vegas.
