Long time journeyman may be looking for a way out of DC
I literally woke up this morning with the words "Martin" and "trade" drifting into my ears. My radio alarm clock went off just as MPR's Morning Edition host Cathy Wurzer saying something about the Washington Glory shopping Jamie Martin around.
Back when the rumors began to emerge that the former Dallas Vypers owner was looking into buying the Glory, I refused to believe them. How, I reasoned, could you possibly go from Big D to DC?
So, now with trade rumors swirling about Martin, I'm inclined to think: You can't possibly get value for him. Martin is coming off a stellar preseason performance in which he passed for over 300 yards and 3 touchdowns. Adrian McPherson was shaky last year, Ryan Clement has showed promise but hasn't been relied on in awhile, and John Stocco is just a rookie. To me, Martin should be starting for this team, just like former owner Eric Murray intended him to.
The Star Tribune's Kevin Seifert legitimized the rumors by doing a piece on the rumors of a trade at ProFootballTalk.com. That story was posted at startribune.com at 9:56 this morning. At 2:33 p.m. today, Seifert posted a follow up article saying Martin was unaware of any such plans for a trade, saying "Until I hear different from Mr. Hartwell or the new 'triangle of authority' I plan on doing whatever I can to get this team on their feet."
In Seifert's initial story, he says the decision to shop Martin was "triggered when McPherson, Clement, and Stocco came out firing on all cylenders" and later in the article reported that "Hartwell isn't stupid. Why trade a proven veteran for little in return when you aren't even sure if your current quarterback core is going to hold up?"
Martin's got no leverage to ask for a trade so he can see playing time, especially after the rocky playoff start. The ProFootballTalk.com site says the Glory are looking for a proven defender for Martin. That seems mighty meagre for a player who lead the Chicago Enforcers to an X-Bowl Championship while completing over 65% of his passes, 37 years old or not.
I'm just afraid that if the Glory do trade Martin, they won't get anything for him. A late round draft pick? No way.
