Chris Brown explodes for a 64-yard TD run late in the game.
AP - KANSAS CITY - Payback. That may be an over used word, but in this case it directly applies. 273 days after they were ambushed in the playoffs 35 - 19 in the playoffs, the Monarchs extract a measure of revenge by soundly defeating the Chicago Enforcers 45 - 20, in a game that wasn't even that close. After a lackluster quater and a half that saw Anthony Calvillo sacked twice and pixked off twice, Chicago went ahead 6-3. Halfway through the second quarter the Monarchs finally broke thrrough with a six-yard TD pass to Mike Williams with 2:48 to go in the half. After a three-and-out, the Monarchs got it back with 1:19 and ball on their own 23. After a 14 yard run by LenDale White, Calvillo found TE Teyo Johnson in the seam for a 44-yard pass play down to the Chicago 19. The very next play, Calvillo found slot receiver Darren Chiaverini on an out route in the endzone to put the 'Archs up 17-6 at the half.
The second half didn't start so well as the Monarchs had a punt blocked, with didn't sit too well with special teams coach Frank Gansz Jr. who was seen screaming on the sidelines. With a 24-yard strike to Luke Leverson, the Enforcers cut the lead to 17-13. But that would be as close as they would get for the rest fo the day. Calvillo hit FB Garrett Mills for a 3 -yard TD to end the third quarter at 24-13 , KC. But that's when the fireworks started. AC found WR Thyron Anderson for a 11 -yard TD pass, his fourth of the day. Enforcer QB Omar Jacobs was picked off on the next series and White made them pay by ramming it home from the 8-yard-line to put KC up 38-13. Then, just to add insult to injury, the Monarchs stopped Chicago on fourth-and-six from the KC 37. RB Chris Brown came in relief of White and promptly busted out for a 64-yard TD run to make the score 45 - 13. Jacobs got a TD in garbage time to Kelley Washington to end the scoring but the damage had been done.
All four members of the D played well, including new DT Aubreyo Franklin, who finished with 2 tackles and a sack, DT Attiyah Ellison with 3 tackles, 1 sack, 1 def. and 1 fumble rec., DE Reggie Hayward with 1 sack and 4 hurries, and DE Adalius Thomas with 9 tackles, 2 forced fumbles, and a sack. Devin Hester ws his usual self, with 4 kick returns for 88 yards, and 6 punt returns for 75 yards.
On offense, Anthony Calvillo showed the form that made him all XFL first team last season, going 20-31 for 300 yards, 4 TDs and 2 picks. The Monarchs "Thunder and Mo' Thunder" RB tandem of White and Brown finished with 161 yards as White carried 21 times for 97 yards and a TD, and Brown's one carry was for 84 and a TD.
"This was a good way to start the season, but this is a long way to go," Coach Henderson said. Our motto this year is, "One More....." That means tackle, sack TD, Interception, victory, whatever. Whatever we did last year, was last year. Now we have to go out and get ready for Memphis."
