Rex Ryan would have preferred to be a head coach.
So, after considering a return to Baltimore when no head coaching offers were made, he got his wish.
Ryan was introduced yesterday as the fourth head man in the history of the Pittsburgh Ironmen. Ryan spent nine seasons with the Baltimore Ravens in the NFL, three as defensive coordinator.
The son of former NFL coach Buddy Ryan, Rex Ryan has established himself as one of the best defensive coaches in the game. In Pittsburgh, using the same 3-4 base defense, he'll look to establish the same success he had in Baltimore. In 2005, his first season as defensive coordinator, Baltimore finished second in the AFC in total defense. In 2006, Baltimore had the NFL's top-ranked defense in yardage and points.
The Ironmen won the XFL East as an expansion team in 2002 under head coach Jim Mora, but are only 16-44 in the six seasons since under Mora, Dave Wannstedt, and Tom Moore.

Steve Mariucci is returning to the Bay Area
The San Francisco Demons announced today that they have hired Steve Mariucci as the franchise's third head coach. No terms of his contract were disclosed.
The 52 year-old former SF 49er head coach had been an analyst on NFL Network. As the 49ers' coach from 1997-2002, he compiled a 60-43 (.583) record, while his teams earned playoff berths four times. Before that, he was the head coach at the University of California-Berkeley, taking the Bears to the Aloha Bowl despite just a 6-5 regular-season mark.
Mariucci will inherit a team in San Francisco that was competitive, although going 5-7, last year but had a multitude of offensive problems, finishing last in both total offense (averaging just 279 yards/game) and in scoring (just 15.1).
