BIRMINGHAM
Barring some last-minute action as spring (and training camp) draws near, it looks like Casey Clausen will stay on and merely switch places with Brian Brohm. With the loss of Cedric Cobbs to MEM, Steve Slaton, second among rookie RBs with 813 yards rushing, becomes the starting back and the Bolts did get him some backup help in the form of Chris Brown from KC. They also signed former Payton Award winner Jamaal Branch, trying to resume his career after suffering a broken leg with the NFL's NO Saints. The Bolts went out and traded for Ben Utecht to help make up for the loss of Jerramy Stevens. Marcus Johnson comes over from SF to replace Calvin Armstrong at RT, Armstrong will return to the team, if he does, as a backup after starting at LT and RT in 2007-08. DT Anttaj Hawthorne joined fellow ex-Bolt Alex Stepanovich in KC, leaving the Bolts with another gap to fill. With CB Jack Ikegwuonu expected to be ready to go after missing his rookie season with an ACL/MCL tear and the fine play of Wilrey Fontenot (32 tkl, two INTs), the Bolts will probably dangle Ahmad Hawkins. Connor Hughes had a career year in 2008 (24/25 FG) and was re-signed.
CAROLINA
The Colonels, who are still searching for consistent, quality QB play, were rebuffed when Derek Anderson re-sigend with the Outlaws. So the Colonels are back to where they were a year ago: hoping for the best out of Ricky Ray. Ray will still have Jerricho Cotchery, coming off a year in which he led the team with 816 yards receiving and 5 TDs. Oft-troubled former NFL first-round pick (and NC State product) Koren Robinson replaces Jason Geathers in the slot. The Colonels retained center Pat Ross, an integral part of their run game the last three seasons. Defensively, the Colonels will head into the second year of their new 3-4 alignment. Veteran DT Grady Jackson returns to plug the middle. Richard Seigler and Zak DeOssie will be candidates to replace Ryan Fowler, who was released. Andre Maddox returns after exploring the market.
CHICAGO
For the second offseason in a row the Enforcers made a baffling
move and re-signed a player coming off a disappointing year, this
time WR Kelley Washington. They did, to their credit, re-sign
dependable veteran Luke Leverson as a fallback. A trio of youngsters--Tim Duckworth, Drew Radovich, and Eric Young--will
fight to replace Elton Brown at right guard. CB Mike Rumph retired in the offseason, but should be no big loss as '08 first-rounder Charles Godfrey had taken his job as the nickel back anyway. Mike Nugent returns off a league-low 66 points--a reflection of a lousy offense.
DALLAS
The Lonestars didn't let themselves get pinched in FA like they did a year ago, this time keeping all their stars (no pun intended)
beginning with all-XFL WR Rashaun Woods. LBs Lance Mitchell
and John Saldi (the latter took over after the events surrounding
former Lonestar LaMarcus McDonald) return as does emerging FS
Junior Rosegreen, as does the league's best return man in Will
Pettis, who holds the all-time record with a 42.4 kick return average in 2007 and returned a pair a kickoffs for scores in '08. Plus, Ben Nowland, who began his career in DAL, returns to replace retired center Aaron Graham. Corey Webster, whom the Lonestars traded for early in the season after they lost Andre Dyson, also is back. The Lonestars replaced NFL-bound Josh Brown with Josh Huston (ORL) and also found a way to hang on to John Torp.
DETROIT
The Mustangs went into the offseason with two big potential FAs and come back with one in CB Bryant McFadden, while OLB Michael Boley signed w MEM. The Mustangs signed Vincent Jackson, who will team with Justin Gage to give QB Matt Kegel two big targets (both 6'5). LG Will Montgomery and RT Adam Stenavich, who both became first-time starters in 2008, played well (especially in run blocking) and were rewarded with new contracts. It's become sort of a running joke in DET as the Mustangs made it five for five in selecting a defensive lineman in the first round (one of which, Darrion Scott, is now out of the league and pled guilty to charges of child endangerment), but that streak should end in 2009 as Gabe Watson returns from a freak knee injury that cost him his '08 season and will join '08 first-round pick Trevor Laws on the inside.
JACKSONVILLE
Palko-mania ruled the land, at least in JAC, as the Bulls finally got
over the hump and did it from an 0-3 hole. Tyler Palko got a big
extension, and the Bulls looked to trade Joseph Addai (to no takers as of yet). The Bulls will go into their defense of their first X-Bowl title by making some changes: On the O-line, Ray Willis will slide over to RT and Chris Myers to RG while John Sullivan moves in at C. Defensively the Bulls will return to a 4-3. Dan Connor, the league's DROY will move to OLB and replace Mike Nattiel. The strange events surrounding rookie SS Caleb Campbell, who was recalled by the Army and could be unavailable to the Bulls until 2011, have altered the Bulls' plans in the secondary as Campbell was expected to be their '09 starter. The Bulls re-signed Chris Harrell. Dustin Colquitt moves down to JAC after four years in PIT.
KANSAS CITY
After a third straight postseason flop, which has tarnished Donnie Henderson's record since becoming the Monarchs' head man three years ago (his 28-8 regular season mark is bested only by Mark Criner, who had a regular season mark of 30-8 in his first three campaigns as CHI head coach), the Monarchs yet again brought out the hammer, this time giving the slip to veterans Adalius Thomas and Aubrayo Franklin. Of course, they also retained quite a bit of their own too, notably TE Teyo Johnson, guards Evan Mathis and Jason Brown, and LB Kevin Burnett, all of which played in the all-XFL game in JAC. 2009 will also likely be the last hurrah for XFL MVP Anthony Calvillo, with Colt Brennan as the heir apparent (Matt Nagy signed with SF). Anttaj Hawthorne comes over from BIR to replace Franklin at DT, while Baraka Atkins and '07 first-rounder Jarvis Moss will be expected to step up with Thomas gone. Cameron Wake, a sack machine in the CFL with a whopping 39 sacks in two seasons, will replace him. Orlando Scandrick replaces Reggie Durden as the nickel back. The Monarchs made history briefly with two 40-something kickers on the roster as Morten Andersen was signed to fill in for an injured John Carney in the playoffs, but Andersen's retirement leaves the Monarchs down to one.
LAS VEGAS
The Outlaws lost all-XFL DT Rien Long after a terrible offseason
auto accident last January, and, with the likelihood of him ever playing again almost nil, outright released him in the fall. But that was small potatoes compared to what happened to the rest of their defense, as their Rebel LB duo Ryan Claridge and Adam Seward both left. Erin Henderson will take over Claridge's WLB spot, with yet to be determined where Trev Faulk will play, remaining at SLB or moving back inside. The strong play of second-round pick Tom Zbikowski (52 tkl, 2 sk) will make the loss of SS Jamaal Brimmer (MEM) easier to accept, especially with FS Sam Brandon coming back. There's a gap in the middle of the O-line after Ben Nowland returned to DAL (where he spent his firts three seasons), holdover Nick Mihlhauser will have a shot at becoming the starter.
LOS ANGELES
The Xtreme's offseason started with some coaching controversy.
Widely expected they would hire Lane Kiffin to replace Bob Toledo, instead they hired Brian Billick (and as luck would have it, Kiffin wound up available just a few weeks later). Interestingly enough, the team will have somewhat of a Baltimore Ravens' flavor as Billick hired his former DC, Mike Nolan, to be his DC with the Xtreme signing former Nolan pupil Aubrayo Franklin to anchor the Xtreme's shift to a 3-4. Ennis Davis will either be dealt or released. The team had toyed with the idea of signing Matt McCoy before settling on Lonnie Ford/Tim Cheatwood (the two combined for 35 QB pressures) as an OLB convert, and Lawrence Flugence remaining at ILB. The odd man out of the Ford/Cheatwood duo may also be on the move as well. Kareem Kelly attracted interest from SF before re-signing with LA. The Xtreme also retained dependable veteran SS Bobby Jackson among others. Adam Terry will switch back to LT, where he started as a rookie in '05 with RT being up for grabs, the favorite being Doug Free. The interior of the line will almost be all new as '08 rookies Andrew Crummey and Robert Felton should be ready for spots. Crummey replacing the retired Cory Raymer at C and Felton at LG replacing Antwan Kirk-Hughes.
MEMPHIS
The Maniax waited a while before thei big offseason makeover, starting with the league's hottest coaching prospect, Bulls' OC James Lofton, as their new head man. Then the Maniax went on the move, luring Cedric Cobbs, whom they drafted with one of two first round picks in 2004, back to MEM. Then, looking at the losses of MLB Patrick Sapp (retirement) and OLB Cols Colas, the 'Ax made a big splash with a pair of OLBs in Ryan Claridge and Michael Boley, which will move Omar Gaither back to MLB.
In the secondary, the Maniax' big moves were SS Jamaal Brimmer and the return of CB Reggie Durden. The releases of RB Eric Shelton and WR Latef Grim were not totally surprising.
NEW YORK
The Hitmen nixed a trade with KC for Aubrayo Franklin believing that Franklin would simply be released (which he was), but they may end up losing out on him as LA looks to be in the lead to sign him but JAC and CAR are also interested. LB Matt McCoy had offers from ORL, LV, and SF (where he played 2005-06), but elected to return. The Hitmen did lose both RB Bobby Purify and WR Taylor Stubblefield to ORL, but both were third on the depth chart. They will keep their WR duo of Emmett Johnson and Terrance Copper together after signing Copper to a new deal. Jeremy Ito, who appeared in three games for DET last year, replaces Tyler Jones (ORL).
ORLANDO
The Rage expected to lose WR Vincent Jackson, who had been made expendable by Early Doucet, but were kind of stunned to lose CB Domonique Foxworth. Meanwhile, the Rage signed Randy
Starks, who will jump over to DE, giving the Rage a three-man front of Starks, Jovon Bush, and Nate Dwyer (and FA signee Benard Thomas in tow). ORL lost out on Matt McCoy, but are plenty stacked at OLB. Marcus McCauley, who forced a team-high four fumbles, will replace Foxworth at CB opposite veteran Clevan Thomas. K Josh Huston was a big loss, but the Rage regrouped, signing Tyler Jones. Their other two losses, Brett Basanez (LA) and Ken Oxendine (released), are minimal.
PITTSBURGH
The Ironmen took care of their biggest need defensively (corner) by re-signing Ashton Youboty and then going out and getting Domonique Foxworth from ORL. LB could be devastating as Keyaron Fox and Ahmad Brooks, who both enjoyed resurgences under first-year head coach Rex Ryan, remain unsigned although
Ryan believes he'll be able to keep both. Former starting TE Alex Smith left for ORL, but the Ironmen kept their biggest strength intact (OL) by re-signing LT Adam Goldberg and adding RG Adam Snyder. Seneca Wallace, the only QB in league history to play in the X-Bowl for two different teams, will take over as the starting QB. On the defensive front, Jovan Haye replaces Omari Hand. The Ironmen also signed former NFL P Dirk Johnson to a one-year deal after losing Dustin Colquitt (JAC).
SAN FRANCISCO
The Andrew Walter era appears to be over in SF as the Demons signed KC backup Matt Nagy. Walter was benched late in the season for Shaun King as the Demons finished one game short of the division title. The Demons' strength, however, could take a hit with the loss of Randy Starks although the Demons did retain
Ronald Fields. The rest of the defense remains intact as the Demons re-signed both CB Eric Green and S Brodney Pool. Jose Cortez also returns after the Demons toyed with signing another kicker. Brad Butler, who got playing time at LG last year in WAS with Rob Sims hurt, will replace Adam Snyder at RG. Also coming in as O-line reinforcements are well-traveled OG Matt Anderle, who played in SF in 2004, and Adrien Clarke.
SEATTLE
Bad as the Reign OL was in 2008, they did have one bright spot in LT Joe Toledo, and they took care of him with a new four-year deal. Center Nick Hardwick's loss (knee) for the entire season was felt as his replacement, Tupe Peko, got pushed around at will and won't be returning. Jerramy Stevens returns to SEA, this time with the Reign. Stevens was a bit of an enigma with the Seahawks, but had a good run in BIR. Ironically enough, his arrival will all but spell the end for Dominique Byrd, another enigma whose issues with SEA ranged from missing team meetings to bad practice habits. He played in just three games in '08 without catching a pass. The Reign lost emerging DE Jovan Haye but return vet DE Reggie Hayward.
WASHINGTON
The Glory are still looking to replace Israel Raybon, who retired
after notching six sacks in '08. But the Glory did get around to
re-signing RB Marion Barber. The Glory are also trying to keep CB
Ronyell Whitaker, who had a team-leading four picks in '08. They
retained ST ace Kai Parham. Top OL backup Brad Butler, who started at LG in place of an injured Rob Sims, is gone. Backup TE Jeff King is an expected loss as well. WR Mark Bradley failed to build on a breakout-'07 and probably will not return.
Barring some last-minute action as spring (and training camp) draws near, it looks like Casey Clausen will stay on and merely switch places with Brian Brohm.
