1. Kansas City (from San Antonio)-Sergio Kindle, LB, Texas
The Monarchs will be even harder (and that's a good thing in this case) team to read with the addition of DE/OLB tweener Kindle. They play a 4-3 base set but defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli mixes up both the 4-3 and 3-4. Kindle will play behind Cameron Wake on the weak side.
2. Chicago (from Seattle)-Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame
The longstanding Chicago QB-rama may finally be coming to an end with the pick of Clausen, definitely a surprise entrant into the XFL Draft. Byron Leftwich will probably start the season, but don't be surprised if that doesn't last too long. This move also probably signaled the end for Trent Edwards, who incidentally is the only other drafted rookie QB in franchise history.
3. Chicago-Taylor Mays, S, USC
Another surprise entrant is, in name anyway, a perfect fit for the Enforcers, as Mays, while not the best pass defender in the world, is definitely an enforcer who will make opposing receivers think twice about coming over the middle.
4. Memphis-Rodger Saffold, OT, Indiana
The Maniax will entrust Saffold to handle the left tackle spot from day one and help ensure last year's bloodbath doesn't happen again while they decide what to do with former first-rounder Andrew Whitworth, part of the problem.
5. Pittsburgh-Terrence Cody, DT, Alabama
This pick was obvious when the Monarchs acquired the #1 pick from San Antonio. Cody will instantly step in to the Maulers' front three, lining up alongside Shaun Cody (no relation) and 2009 first-rounder Jarron Gilbert
6. Dallas-Jordan Shipley, WR, Texas
This pick pretty much spells the end for Santonio Holmes, already out the first three games for a substance abuse violation. Shipley will likely split time with Brad Smith in Holmes' absence.
7. San Francisco-Charles Brown, OT, USC
This is OL insurance in the short term, as all-XFL left tackle Rob Murphy may have just one more season left in him. They could also try to trade him.
8. Detroit-Brian Price, DT, UCLA
The Mustangs once again go defensive line with their first pick, but this is one that gives the Mustangs flexibility. They could move Trevor Laws to DE, and pair Price up with Gabe Watson on the inside. Price also becomes their insurance in case Watson leaves as a free agent after the 2010 season.
9. Washington-Brandon Spikes, LB, Florida
The Glory get the top inside linebacker available and will probably dump last year's starter Paris Lenon. Spikes is the cousin of former Monarchs LB Takeo Spikes.
10. Orlando-Golden Tate, WR, Notre Dame
The Rage get their playmaker and name to replace to Jeremaine Copeland. Drafting Tate also allows the Rage to ease Devin Hester in as he makes the transition to full-time receiver. Tate could start at one WR spot early to let that plan unfold.
11. Los Angeles-T.J. Ward, S, Oregon
The Xtreme miss out on a dream safety tandem of Mays and Michael Griffin but shouldn't be too disappointed with Ward, a hard-hitting safety who walked on at Oregon.
12. Birmingham-LaMarr Houston, DT, Texas
After going with Sen'Derrick Marks, a defensive tackle out of Auburn last year with their first pick, and he wowed the team in converting to a 3-4 end, the Bolts do it again by grabbing Houston, who will replace veteran free-agent-to-be Robaire Smith.
13. Las Vegas-Dexter McCluster, RB, Mississippi
The Outlaws would have grabbed an OLB with Erin Henderson out the first three games but they essentially did that with their second pick, sending it to Kansas City and bringing Adam Seward back, this time to play the weak side. So the Outlaws went BPA and get McCluster, who will replace Jerome Harrison as the COP/third down back and also become their kick return man.
14. New York-Vladimir DuCasse, OG, Massachusetts
DuCasse, a bulky lineman who also can play tackle, will push Josh Beekman, the Hitmen's worst run blocker, right away at right guard.
15. San Antonio (from Kansas City)-Myron Lewis, CB, Vanderbilt
Lewis isn't a big name like Terrence Cody to rally around for sure, but he's also what Dominique Foxworth and Ashton Youboty aren't; a big corner (6-2).
16. Carolina-Armanti Edwards, WR, Appalachian State
With the loss of McCluster, Mike Martz goes from Plan A to Plan B, and he gets to stay in the vicinity to do it, grabbing Edwards, who played QB at Appalachian State. When asked what Edwards will be to the Colonels' offense in 2010, Martz simply said 'A weapon'
