DESCRIPTION: This XFL sim continues as a 16-team league in 2024 which teams either have owners or run by the league itself (any league-run teams will be run exclusively on a "mirror" basis to eliminate conflict) and uses Action PC! 2022 as its sim engine
HISTORY: What became the current sim began as a 'what if?' series on the original XFL in 2002. It grew into a league the next year with two expansion teams, two more in the fall (two seasons were run in 2003--though both, as well as the past two seasons, have been "retconned" in historical sections), and then four more in 2004, doubling from the original eight. This format continued until right before what was to be the 2012 draft, when I had to shut the league down due to outside circumstances (so I beat the real world by eight years in that regard). In 2017 I brought back a ten-team lineup I had originally planned to go forward with in 2012, and then brought back two more teams the next year for the current 12.
STRUCTURE: The sim is populated mostly with players who were drafted either on day three of the NFL draft or went undrafted--in 2019 it was amended to include day two picks. As you can probably guess I went back and filled the five-year gap using this system, with the change being that the draft was moved to after the season, thus there were no actual rookies in the 2012 season--those that were drafted played as rookies in 2013.
PLAYER ACQUISITONS: The start of the XFL season (which returned a post-Super Bowl spot in 2019), combined with the new NFL league year not beginning until free agency in mid-March, as well as the XFL salary cap being roughly 60% of the NFL's, heavily discourages top-shelf NFL free agent signings.
A)Free agency: XFL free agency begins Wednesday July 5. Technically there are no restrictions--one could sign Tom Brady if they wanted, but also better be prepared to pay up, and in his case you will have to guarantee the whole contract. With a smaller cap it'll be impossible to field a team of nothing but indoor league all-stars around him, in which he'll seriously begin to question his latest career move, so go at your own risk. Salary/contract data has been used previously with Over The Cap, however 2023 free agents will have their own structure using salary info that comes with the sim as well as escalators that I used in another.
B)Draft: The 2023 XFL Draft will take place Aug 1-2. The breakdown of players that can be drafted is as follows:
NFL second round--XFL first round
NFL third round--XFL second round
NFL fourth round--XFL third round
NFL fifth round--XFL fourth round
NFL sixth round--XFL fifth round
NFL seventh round--XFL sixth round
Undrafted free agents--XFL seventh-eighth rounds*
*Usually about 15-20 players surprisingly don't get drafted, those comprise the last two rounds of the XFL Draft. Draft prospects are listed every year, but with all the draft info available, it's pretty easy to tell which undrafteds fall where. Rookie salary breakdowns are also listed before the draft.
