The last time Virgil Green, Brandon Marshall, and Colin Kaepernick took the field and together was in Nevada's January 2011 bowl game, the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl. Three months later Kaepernick was a second round pick of the San Francisco 49ers (thus not having to go too far from where the Wolfpack's 2010 season ended); Green came to the XFL as a fourth round pick of the Pittsburgh Maulers, and won an X-Bowl as rookie playing behind Greg Olsen and James Casey; and Marshall was drafted the next year by the Jacksonville Jaguars. That was that...........
......until Sunday.
Green, now on his third team to cap his tenth year in the league, was on the opposite side of his former teammates, not only headed to the X-Bowl in their first year as Monarchs but also yet to taste defeat. Whereas Green's role with the Demons was effectively reduced neither Kaepernick nor Marshall played a small part in the Monarchs' 2020 run that is possibly one win away from topping their 2019 March to history. Kaepernick started two games early in the season when Case Keenum was knocked out with a concussion, and Marshall was a part of a linebacker rotation that found its footing by the end of the year and came up with the first turnover of the game.
Understandably, Green, who caught two passes for 16 yards, wouldn't be too thrilled being on the wrong side of a 56-27 stomping, but he met up with them after the game: "Just like old times".
He was also bullish on the Monarchs' repeat chances on Sunday, "They gonna smoke Orlando, they got everything. Got a run game, vertical, pass rush, secondary. We were playing like 14 or 15 guys out there, that's how good they were. It's like the 85 Bears".
As for his two amigos?
"Oh definitely, Colin went in for them and nothing dropped, then Brandon helped them up the middle. Being on a historical team is great, man, but there's a difference between being on one and being part of one. They definitely helped take it to the next level".
As to the hypothetical of him being reunited with either next year (Marshall is a free agent, and Kaepernick is sure to attract plenty of interest for a potential trade)?
"Brandon would ball with us. Colin, well we already got a starter that's pretty good, plus now he'd have to go against that defense".
Sounds like one big happy family.
