Hitmen 20 Enforcers 13 (East Rutherford, NJ)
Taylor Heinicke threw two touchdown passes and the Hitmen defense made it hold up, keeping the Enforcers out of the endzone to lock up their first trip to the X-Bowl in 14 years
Each team traded blows for the majority of the first half but had little to show for it, including the Enforcers' decision to go for it on fourth and 4 at the 6 late in the first quarter. But New York finally broke through midway through the second on a long scoring pass from Heinicke to Jamison Crowder. A quick Chicago three-and-out led to another scoring drive, this time a 14-yard pass from Heinicke to J.K. Dobbins that put the Hitmen up 14-0 just 19 seconds before halftime
The Enforcers, who other than one drive had nothing going on the first half, took a shot and connected as Gardner Minshew hit Quintez Cephus for 55 yards to set up a John Baron field goal to get them on the board just before halftime. It seemed to spark Chicago a bit
After the Hitmen got a Graham Gano field goal to go up 17-3 Corey Clement, who took four kickoffs back for scores, did it again to pull the Enforcers within 17-10, then Adrian Amos recovered a J.K. Dobbins fumble, and Chicago would get three more to get within 17-13. That would be it though
Gano's 30-yarder, set up by a 52-yard Juwann Winfree punt return, would be the only scoring of the fourth quarter, as neither team would otherwise advance into the other's territory. Minshew's final pass on fourth and 13 from the 35 with 18 seconds left was well short, and the Hitmen avenged their overtime loss to the Enforcers in the 2018 playoffs as Heinicke took one last knee
Minshew finished 18 of 33 for 261 yards in the loss as the Hitmen took out the running game. James White, who ran for 155 yards in the week 15 matchup, was held to just 31 on 13 carries. The Hitmen ran for 120, up from just 55 in that game, led by Dobbins with 79 on 19 carries
Ron Rivera, who vowed at his introductory presser that the Hitmen would be in the X-Bowl sooner than later, is now 2-0 against the Enforcers in the playoffs, having beaten them in 2014 while he was in Washington
