Stallions 22 Colonels 21
RALEIGH, NC--Greg Zuerlein kicked the game-winner from 37 yards out as time expired to lift the St. Louis Stallions, coming off a dismal season-opening loss, to a much-needed victory on a rainy Saturday in the Colonels' home opener.
The Stallions capitalized after Poona Ford recovered a Kenneth Gainwell fumble with less than three minutes left and Carolina looking to at least stretch their lead to five. St. Louis went 48 yards in six plays, all on the ground except for the opening play, a six-yard Brian Hoyer pass to Devin Duvernay. On the second play, Rhamondre Stevenson broke free for 24 yards to the Carolina 38, and a pair of Jonathan Taylor runs got the Stallions inside the 25, before Zuerlein's kick. Zuerlein had missed a pair of kicks, one extra point and one field goal.
The Colonels had a pedestrian offensive day for the second straight week, and once again had no running game, only gaining 45 yards. But their defense came through on the opening drive when Kavon Frazier picked Hoyer off, and cashed in for points as Kyle Trask, alternating with Henne on the series, hit Jaron Brown for a short touchdown pass, one play after an offsides penalty negated a Kyzir White interception.
The Stallions pulled to within 7-6 on a 33-yard Taylor run, only for the Colonels to answer with a nine-play 75-yard drive and a Henne toss to Jordan Howard that made it 14-6 late in the first.
Carolina took their largest lead at 21-9 on a 62-yard punt return by Hunter Renfrow. But a week after rallying from 14-3 down to win while holding Orlando scoreless in the second half, it was the Colonels' turn to be left standing in the aisle, as they failed to register a first down until their final drive of the game, which ended in Gainwell's fumble. The Stallions got a Jeremy McNichols touchdown run and a 46-yarder from Zuerlein to pull within two by the midway point of the fourth quarter.
Gainwell, the rookie out of Memphis, has rushed for 12 yards on nine carries through two games. Howard wasn't much better however, rushing for just 21 yards on 11 carries. The Colonels are averaging just 2.3 yards per carry through two games as they've been playing without left guard Alex Lewis and Saturday were without left tackle Will Richardson. Trask, the second overall pick in the draft, has competed all five passes he's thrown this season for 80 yards and a touchdown, but Kevin O'Connell stressed in the postgame that Henne, who was 19 of 31 for 158 yards with a touchdown and an interception, is still the starter.
The Stallions got the jumpstart they needed, rushing for 188 yards led by Taylor with 121 on 21 carries. They finished with 390 yards of total offense. Carolina is now 1-8 at home under O'Connell after going 1-7 a year ago.
