Demons 22 Colonels 20
RALEIGH, NC--We may have seen the most excruciating way to lose and an unlikely way to win both in the same game. The best part, it was followed up with an onside kick recovery, but even that wouldn't be enough.
After Michael Dickson pinned Carolina at the 1 with seconds left, Chad Henne failed to get out of his own endzone (and likely send the game to overtime) as the San Francisco Demons overcame said onside and won their second straight, a 22-20 victory over the Carolina Colonels, who have lost consecutive games as their home woes since the beginning of 2021 continue. The Colonels are 2-9 at home under O'Connell and 9-18 since their return to the league in 2019.
Overtime looked to be the order of the day after Kevin O'Connell reached into his bag of tricks with Jordan Howard, on a halfback pass, throwing the game-tying touchdown to Tee Higgins with 1:02 left. The Demons mounted a drive that got to midfield as they looked to get into position for an Evan McPherson game-winner, but stalled just as quickly.
After Dickson's punt, Henne tried to sneak up the middle, but Sheldon Day emerged from the scrum and drove Henne back for the league's first-ever game-winning safety. After Carolina's claims that Day jumped into the neutral zone went unconfirmed, the safety stood. The Demons still had to withstand the other first in league history, as that Alohi Gilman recovered Bradley Pinion's kick. But the Colonels, who quickly drove for a Rodrigo Blankenship field goal at the end of the first half, had just 11 seconds left, and two passes by Henne fell incomplete.
The Demons trailed 10-3 late in the first half when Henne was picked off by Marvell Tell, setting up the Demons' first touchdown, a short pass from Kyle Lauletta to Keelan Doss. After the Colonels' field goal, San Francisco took the lead in the third quarter on a Brian Hill touchdown.
Howard also caught a touchdown pass in the first quarter, he rushed for 50 yards on eight carries as the Colonels worked Kenneth Gainwell more into the offense. The rookie out of Memphis, who had rushed for just 48 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries, had his best game of the season with 21 carries for 77 yards.
Lauletta was 16 of 25 for 182 yards and a touchdown. McPherson kicked a pair of 50-yarders, hitting from 54 and 56.
