Enforcers 20 Sharks 7
CHICAGO, IL--Two years ago in this matchup, Drew Lock made a statement with a game-winning touchdown pass to Quincy Adeboyejo late in the fourth quarter, here he made a similar statement with a 73-yard touchdown pass to Marvin Jones.
Unfortunately for Lock, it was just the middle of the first quarter.
After a relatively slow start, Gardner Minshew got the Enforcers going with a 40-yard hail mary to Randall Cobb on the final play before halftime and the defense slammed the door shut in the second half, as the Sharks once again went without after halftime in a 20-7 win at Soldier Field.
Minshew completed 17 of 20 passes, his third game this year where he's completed 75% or more of his throws, and while for just 174 yards the ground game helped him out again, led by James White with 20 carries for 88 yards and the go-ahead score in the third quarter. After Brent Urban sacked Lock to force a fumble, the Enforcers were going to add three on a 52-yard John Baron field goal, his first make after missing two. But after being nullified by illegal motion, Rex Ryan sent the offense back out on the field. Minshew heaved to the endzone and Cobb emerged from a crowd with the ball and what would be the game-changing tying score.
The Sharks turned the ball over again when D'Andre Swift fumbled on the second play of the first series in the half, that not only led to a seven-play touchdown drive but another futile second half offensive performance, as they went their fifth game in the last six without scoring a touchdown after halftime. They only have three offensive touchdowns in the second half/overtime this season, two of which were scored by Swift, a total non-factor as he rushed for just eight yards on four carries and caught two passes for 23 yards.
Jaylon Ferguson had three of Chicago's six sacks, his second straight three-sack game to give him seven after a slow start. Chicago came in the top team in the league in sacks with 26. The Enforcers played their second straight game without Golden Tate, out with a hand injury.
Lock finished 18 of 28 for 295 yards and a touchdown. Paddy Fisher, a three-year starter at Northwestern active in just his second game this year, made his first career tackle as he brought down David Moore on a punt return.
NEXT WEEK: TB (2-5) bye (vs. NY 4/30); CHI (6-1) at WAS 4/23
