Hitmen 26 Lonestars 24(OT)
EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ--For the second time in less than two weeks, the New York Hitmen had a flair for the dramatic that saved their season, this time rallying from a 17-point deficit to force overtime and winning the game on a safety when Kingsley Keke tackled Javonte Williams in the endzone with 1:48 left in the extra period.
Offensively, the Hitmen had their best game of the year with 488 yards of offense. Taylor Heinicke threw for 326 yards and three touchdowns and Le'Veon Bell ran like the early days in Pittsburgh with 137 yards on 16 carries as the Hitmen have followed up a four-game skid with back-to-back wins.
Once again it was an end-of-half play that provided the spark.
After Luis Perez' second touchdown pass, both to tight end Albert Okwuegbunam, put the Lonestars up 24-7, it looked like the Lonestars would possibly add on after getting into Hitmen territory, but the drive stalled, however leaving New York just 20 seconds. It started out like the Hitmen were just relieved to go into the half down 17 when Bell ripped off a 39-yard run to the Dallas 47 and just got out of bounds in time for one more play, and the Lonestars, who have have susceptible to the big play, especially at the end of the half, were burned again. Jamison Crowder sprinted down to the endzone while Heinicke avoided multiple sacks, and Crowder came down with the long throw for the game-changing score to cut it to 10.
The second half was disastrous offensively for the Lonestars, turning the ball over twice, including a Stevie Scott redzone fumble as the Lonestars were looking for the game-winning score. The overtime didn't go much better, and then Justin Vogel pinned Dallas at their own 1, and two plays later Keke grounded Williams in the endzone for a game-winning safety, the first in league history to end a game.
Williams gained just 65 yards on 19 carries. Perez was 22 of 41 for 28 for 197 yards with two touchdowns and a pick as the Lonestars have lost three straight.
