Monarchs 37 Stallions 14
KANSAS CITY, MO--It's like all the Kansas City Monarchs needed was a return home, to division play, and Case Keenum.
While beating an overmatched team, one that they've handled well back into the Stallions' days in Las Vegas, probably isn't much of a barometer, Keenum was a bit rusty at times in his first action since week four, but he turned on the jets and ran for three touchdowns as the Monarchs finished with 199 yards rushing and five touchdowns in a 37-14 blowout of St. Louis on a rainy Thursday night at Arrowhead Stadium.
The Monarchs went three and out and turned the ball over on downs their first two possessions, the latter when David Montgomery was stopped for no gain by Charles Omenihu on fourth and 2 from the Stallion 12, but it was bar the door from there. Michael Carter got Kansas City on the board with a seven-yard run, Keenum ran for the first of his three scores on the next series, and Salvon Ahmed finished off the initial onslaught with a four-yard run to make it 20-0. The Stallions responded with an impressive drive, with a four-yard Brian Hoyer pass to Marcus Lucas to get them on the board with 1:07 left.
It looked like they might have stopped the bleeding there after the Monarchs drive stalled on their next series, but anyone who's watched this lopsided series knows better. On the second play of St. Louis' series, Jeremy McNichols fumbled stretching for a first down, and Keenum scored from 12 yards out on the next play to give the Monarchs a 27-7 lead. The lead grew to 37-7 before the Stallions answered with a short pass from Hoyer to Jonathan Taylor.
Nick Bellore recovered the ensuing onside kick, but the Stallions' misery against the Monarchs continued. St. Louis had two touchdowns called back on penalties, and fittingly enough Hoyer, the most sacked quarterback in the league with 29 coming in, was felled by Karter Schult to end it. Hoyer was sacked four more times, with Schult getting two of them.
Much like in New York three weeks ago, the Monarchs saw a number of former players on the opposing side. But this time they minimized their ex-mates contributions, as Lucas got into the endzone and Deatrich Wise had a sack, but Cordarrelle Patterson was held to just three catches for 25 yards and David Bakhtiari, still working his way back into the lineup, gave up a sack to Schult (Jackson Barton was in for the other one) and two pressures.
The Stallions/Outlaws have lost now 18 straight to the Monarchs since last beating them in 2013 in Las Vegas, with the Monarchs' win in the Western Division playoff beginning the streak.
NEXT WEEK: STL (2-6) vs. TB 5/7; KC (5-3) vs. ORL 5/8
