Enforcers 13 Xtreme 10
CARSON, CA--The Chicago Enforcers seem to have picked up right where they left off going into the bye week.
Literally.
Sam Ficken kicked the go-ahead field goal early in the fourth quarter and the Enforcers shut the hapless Xtreme down in the fourth quarter, then ran the final three and a half minutes off the clock as they stayed atop the East with, what else, a 13-10 win Thursday night at Dignity Health Sports Park.
While both teams turned the ball over in the redzone in the first quarter--the Enforcers on a Corey Clement fumble, the Xtreme as Anthony Brown picked Josh Johnson off--the Enforcers took control in the second on a short James White run and a Ficken field goal towards the half to take a 10-0 lead. The Xtreme got back in it in the third with a Johnson touchdown pass to Antonio Callaway and a Dustin Hopkins field goal to set up the fourth quarter clash.
After Ficken's go-ahead kick the Xtreme had a promising drive, but stalled inside the Chicago 40. A short Austin Rehkow punt pinned the Enforcers inside their 10, and they would eventually punt it back. The Xtreme once again made into the Enforcers' half of the field, but once again stalled when Artavis Pierce was driven back for a loss of two on third and 2. In came Rehkow for another punt, but the Xtreme would not see the ball again as White picked up two first downs, and then Clement went for 16 on second and 4 at the Enforcer 36 to seal the game.
Chicago rushed for 216 yards, offsetting an ineffective passing game in which Gardner Minshew threw for just 111 yards on 9 of 17 passing. But the Xtreme netted just 235 yards of offense and moved the sticks a mere nine times in dropping their seventh straight. It was the Enforcers' seventh straifght win, and fifth holding their opponents to 10 points or less.
NEXT WEEK: CHI (8-1) vs. SF 5/14; LA (1-8) at NY 5/14
