Hitmen 27 Xtreme 16
EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ--Jamison Crowder was expected to miss his second straight game with a calf injury.
And then he didn't.
Crowder, who missed last week's overtime win in San Antonio, not only came back for New York's game with the sinking Xtreme this week, he roared back, catching 10 passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns as the Hitmen rallied from a 13-7 halftime deficit for their fifth straight win, a 27-16 victory to keep the Xtreme winless in their last eight games.
His return was a welcome one for the Hitmen, who in their first game without J.K. Dobbins had their worst game rushing since their bye week. New York finished with just 80 yards on the ground, with Le'Veon Bell held to just 47 on 15 carries. But New York's run defense was equal, holding Los Angeles to just 53 yards.
Taylor Heinicke's short touchdown pass to Akeem Hunt put the Hitmen up 14-13, and less than two minutes later the lead grew to 21-13 as Heinicke hit Crowder for a 50-yard score. Graham Gano hit from 38 to push the lead to 24-13.
Josh Johnson struggled, going 21 of 41 for 272 with a touchdown and two interceptions, but it wasn't all on him, as penalties and turnovers denied Los Angeles a chance to end their ever-growing skid. His first interception came as a receiver slipped, and SaQwan Edwards, playing for the first time since week six, returned the interception near midfield; a big play to Antonio Callaway in the third quarter was negated by a hold; and Nelson Spruce fumbled near midfield after making a first down catch as the Xtreme tried to stop the bleeding. He got a temporary reprieve when a Nickell Robey-Coleman interception was wiped out by a pass interference, but it only delayed the inevitable, as Elijah Lee picked him off to effectively end his day, and Gano added a late field goal.
Heinicke continued to be on a serious roll, finishing 24 of 31 for 251 yards with three touchdowns and a pick. In four games since the bye Heinicke has completed 67.1% of his passes for over 1000 yards with 10 touchdowns and three interceptions, a passer rating of 102.3.
New York did have one streak end (that Ron Rivera wasn't sad to see go), their four straight overtime games. Add to that a 19-13 OT loss to Carolina and the Hitmen have played a league-high five games to go to an extra session.
NEXT WEEK: NY (6-4) vs. ORL 5/21; LA (1-9) vs. STL 5/21
