Monarchs 54 Demons 17
KANSAS CITY, MO--Lose games in shocking fashion, come home and punish weaker teams. It's become the routine for the Monarchs in 2022.
Matt Nagy would just like to see an end to the former.
The return to Kansas City of Doug Pederson, Andy Reid's offensive coordinator for the other team in town, was a footnote in the Demons' latest annihilation in Kansas City, this time a 54-17 drubbing as the Monarchs put up 579 yards of offense, Case Keenum led the way, going 19 of 21 for 417 yards and four touchdowns.
And it started on the first play of the game, as Salvon Ahmed took a short pass from Keenum and turned on the jets to a 75-yard touchdown. That wasn't even the Monarchs' only one-play score......of the quarter. Keenum avoided a rush and flipped a screen pass to David Montgomery, who had the convoy (led by newly-acquired left tackle Eric Fisher) set up for him and he rumbled 77 yards for his first of four scores on the day himself. He capped a 96-yard drive with a ten-yard run, then added a four-yard run. When the Demons finally answered with a 38-yard Evan McPherson field goal, Montgomery came back with another four-yard run to make it 35-3.
The Monarchs, perhaps expressing the early-week anger of their loss to San Antonio last week, weren't even done in the half. Another quick stop gave the Monarchs a short field, and in four plays they were in the endzone yet again as Keenum hit Demarcus Robinson.
Nick Folk could be forgiven for missing the extra point when he would end up kicking six on the day.
The Demons, relatively speaking, came to life in the third as Kyle Lauletta threw touchdown passes to Keelan Doss and A.J. Green, but the Monarchs were still playing. Keenum hit Robinson again for a 43-yard score and two Folk field goals finished it off. Levi Wallace even briefly got in on the action with a pick-six before a defensive pass interference against Darius Phillips negated it.
San Francisco has never won in Kansas City, their only two wins came in San Francisco in 2004 and 2006.
NEXT WEEK: SF (5-6) vs. DAL 5/29; KC (7-4) vs. CAR 5/28
