Monarchs 37 Colonels 24
KANSAS CITY, MO--It was a pretty safe bet that Michael Carter's team was going to win this one, just the one that did ended up playing a bigger role.
But this one also had Case Keenum, which didn't hurt.
Michael Carter, the Monarchs' spectacular rookie, took over as the lead back for David Montgomery and carried 11 times for 65 yards and a touchdown in addition to the usual day for Case Keenum (30 of 38 for 374 and two scores) as the Monarchs rolled to a 37-24 win over Carolina Saturday at Arrowhead.
Montgomery, the league leader in rushing, total offense, and touchdowns coming in, lost a yard on his lone carry and left with a knee injury. The Monarchs didn't let that deter them from taking the early lead on a 60-yard touchdown pass from Keenum to Terry McLaurin. The Colonels answered with a short Matt Ammendola field goal, although Kevin O'Connell admitted in the postgame he had misgivings about it because of the potential tone it would set of the Colonels chasing the Monarchs. He ended up being right.
Up 10-3 in the second quarter the Monarchs struck with the expected onslaught, with Carter's run followed by a Keenum touchdown pass to Brice Butler, with the lead staying at 23-3 after Nick Folk missed his sixth extra point of the year. After a good kick return, the Colonels quickly drove the field and got in the endzone on a Chad Henne touchdown pass to Jaron Brown, but the Monarchs had nearly an entire minute to get points of their own, and they would as Folk hit a 49-yarder to close the half, making it 26-10.
Folk banged three more field goals through in the second half and Joe Jackson sacked Henne in the endzone for a safety. Henne threw two touchdown passes, a screen to Jordan Howard that went for a 66-yard touchdown, and one late in the game to Brown after the Colonels recovered an onside kick, one of two they would recover.
Henne, playing without all-XFL wideout Tee Higgins (shoulder), finished 23 of 43 for 387 yards and three touchdowns. Howard rushed seven times for 47 yards and also caught four passes for 132 yards as the showdown of top five running backs as well as offensive players in the league never materialized. Michael Carter, the Colonels' rookie defensive back, had one tackle.
Keenum, who has thrown 114 passes without an interception--last picked on April 28 against St. Louis, has not lost a home game that he's finished this year. The Colonels lost on the road for just the second time in seven games.
